Lü Duan replied: "The Han and Tang Dynasties were different from now, and at that time, either because of the greatness of the country or because of the good reputation, they did that. It can be said that there is no law and no customization. Lü Duan's words made Song Taizong suddenly open up.
Because of all these similarities, coupled with the fact that Lü Duan rarely made lofty remarks in the court, he was mistaken by some people as a confused person, so when Song Taizong planned to make Lü Duan the post of prime minister, others gave him a small report, saying that Lü Duan was confused and could not bear the big responsibility.
This Song Taizong was an accomplished emperor, he had been observing Lü Duan for many years, and after listening to the man's small report, he said a famous sentence evaluating Lü Duan, that is, "Lü Duan is confused about small things, and big things are not confused."
In response to this incident, Emperor Taizong also made a poem with a very deep meaning, one of which is like this: "If you want to be lucidum, you must be a fisherman." This means that Lü Duan's appointment as prime minister is already indisputable, and the position of prime minister is none other than Lü Duan.

1. Appease the Li Jiqian incident
Li Jiqian was a member of the Xiang clan of the Western Xia Dynasty, who had submitted to the Northern Song Dynasty and later rebelled, so that there was no peace on the northwestern border.
Once, during a battle with the Song army, Li Jiqian did not protect his mother, so the old woman became a prisoner of the Song army. When Emperor Taizong learned of this news, he thought that "the son did not teach, and the 'mother' was at fault" and wanted to execute the old lady.
Emperor Taizong was preparing to kill the old lady on the border with great fanfare to punish those who opposed the imperial court, and at that time Kou Zhun was serving as the privy councillor in charge of the national military, and he had always been decisive in his actions, and Emperor Taizong summoned Kou Zhun alone to get his support.
When Kou Zhun came out of Emperor Taizong, he passed by the prime minister's office and happened to be seen by Lü Duan.
Lü Duan stepped forward and grabbed Kou Zhun, asked him if there was anything important, and said, "I don't need to know about the daily affairs of the border gate." If it is a military affair, I am in charge, I must know. ”
Kou Zhun couldn't, so he had to tell him as he was.
When Lü Duan heard this, he asked Kou Zhun to suspend the treatment, and then he went to the emperor to theorize.
He came to Emperor Taizong and said, "Once upon a time, when Chu and Han were fighting, Xiang Yu grabbed Liu Bang's father and wanted to cook him in a pot before the battle, but Liu Bang played a rogue and said that my father is your father, if you must cook, then share me a cup of broth and drink it." People who do great things don't talk about feelings, let alone traitors like Li Jiqian? If His Majesty kills his wife today, will he be able to capture Li Jiqian tomorrow? If not, it would only lead to a vendetta, so that his rebellious heart would be firmer. ”
Emperor Taizong woke up like a dream, felt that what he said was very reasonable, and said that what should be done about it?
Lü Duan suggested that the old lady be properly placed in Yanzhou (Yan'an, Shaanxi) and treat her well and drink well, so that Li Jiqian could not move the horse from the cliff, although he could not immediately surrender to the Song, but his old wife was still in our hands.
When Emperor Taizong heard this, he was thoughtful and loyal.
Later, Li Jiqian's old wife received special services to eat and drink in Yanzhou until she fell ill and died in Yanzhou.
In 1004, Li Jiqian was killed by an arrow while attacking Tubo, and his son Li Deming was a man with a heart, and he announced his submission to the Song Dynasty on the basis of the great Song Haosheng's treatment of his grandmother.
At this point, Lü Duan's foresight has achieved very good results, and it is precisely his great deeds that have won such a peaceful environment.
2. Supporting the succession of Emperor Zhenzong of Song
At the end of 996, Emperor Taizong of Song was critically ill and summoned Lü Duan and told him that if something happened to him, he would help Zhao Heng to ascend the throne, but the position of crown prince was not stable.
Because when Zhao Heng was made crown prince, there were pro-li factions and opposition factions in the dprk, and Lü Duan naturally belonged to the former, and the leader of the opposition was The Inner Servant Wang Ji'en.
Because in the process of the transfer of the throne between Song Taizu and Song Taizong, there was an ancient suspicious case of "candle shadow axe sound", so during this politically sensitive period, Lü Duan accompanied the then crown prince and later Song Zhenzong Zhao Heng to visit Emperor Taizong's bedside every day.

As soon as Emperor Taizong gasped, the empress immediately sent Wang Ji'en to summon Lü Duan, planning to force Lü Duan to agree to make King Chu king.
Wang Ji'en Yin, Lü Duan was more yin than them.
As soon as Wang Ji'en entered the room, Lü Duan decisively locked Wang Ji'en in the house, sent someone to guard him strictly, and then ran into the palace.
Sure enough, the empress proposed to Lü Duan the matter of establishing the king of Chu as emperor, and Lü Duan righteously pushed back and said, "When Emperor Xiandi was there, he had already made it clear that he was the crown prince, so how could we not listen to him?" ”
Since Wang Ji'en, the key figure in the plot, had been controlled, the empress could not see Wang Ji'en, and she had no idea for a while.
Lü Duan took advantage of the heat to strike iron and led his ministers to jointly protect the crown prince to succeed to the throne.
When Zhenzong first ascended the temple, he was hanging a curtain to accept the worship of the courtiers, Lü Duan stood at the bottom, saw that there was a curtain blocking the emperor, he refused to kneel, asked to lift the curtain, and finally he climbed the steps to personally observe that it was indeed Zhenzong himself, and then led the courtiers to prostrate and bow down, shouting long live.
After Zhao Heng succeeded to the throne, he took great care of Lü Duan, who had the merit of the dragon, and every time he received him, he was solemnly arched, Lü Duan was fat, and the steps in the palace were slightly higher, and Zhenzong took care of people to help him up.
In the face of the emperor's so much attention and special care, Lü Duan did not take credit for himself, and the number of ceremonies that should be there was not less, which was also a manifestation of his "big things are not confused".
