He is Zhang Geng, an old hero of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea and a 64-year-old party member.
Zhang Geng, an 88-year-old man, was born in October 1932 in Tanghe County, Henan Province, and joined the army in August 1949 as a soldier in the 447th Regiment of the 149th Division of the 50th Army. In January 1951, he went to Korea to participate in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, and was honorably wounded in the Battle of Baiyun Mountain. In 1956, he transferred to Tongbai and worked in the township government. In ordinary posts, he worked diligently and quietly dedicated himself for 36 years.
He, weathered by wind and rain, hid his merits and fame. He infected the younger generation with his precious spirit and made people moved.

"The Battle of Baiyun Mountain, which I will never forget in my lifetime, is this battle that has made me and many comrades-in-arms say goodbye overnight!" The old man Zhang Geng, who was nearly ninety years old, held out his meritorious badge from the room with trembling hands, tears flashed in his eyes, and told reporters with great excitement.
In 1950, the three-year Korean War broke out. The 447th Infantry Regiment of the 149th Division of the 50th Army, where the old man belonged, was ordered to carry out a defensive blockade in the Baiyun Mountain area. The battle began on January 25, 1951, ended on February 5, and fought fiercely with the Americans for 11 days and nights. At that time, the US 25th Division and other enemy troops, with 10 times the strength of our army, bombarded the positions of the 447 regiments held on the front line of Baiyun Mountain with dozens of aircraft and a large number of artillery and tanks all day long, covering their infantry attacks in turn. Under the conditions of freezing cold, difficult supply of grain and ammunition, and shortage of engineering equipment, the soldiers of our 447th Regiment climbed the ice and lay down in snow and ice, overcame all difficulties, fought bloodily against the enemy who was "armed to the teeth," and repelled the enemy's attacks more than 10 times a day.
From February 1 to 5, the enemy, under the cover of a large number of aircraft, howitzers, and tank guns, attacked the main peak positions of our army's Guangjiao Mountain and Baiyun Mountain with more than 200-500 infantry every day, and dropped a large number of incendiary bombs. Zhang Geng and his comrades-in-arms adopted the daytime defense as the mainstay, waiting for the enemy to attack about 50 meters above the top of the mountain to start shooting, and at night, they went down the mountain to sneak up on the camp, heroically resisted the enemy, repelled more than 30 enemy charges, and recaptured the lost positions many times. February 3 was the day when the enemy attack was the fiercest, more than 20 enemy planes bombed and strafed the main peak of Guangjiao Mountain and Baiyun Mountain, more than 80 artillery pieces poured ammunition on our position, and more than 30 tanks covered more than 500 infantry to attack our army in three ways. At that time, Zhang Geng's 5th company only had more than 120 fighters defending Guangjiao Mountain, and in the face of a large number of enemy attacks, the fighters used grenades, submachine guns, rifles, stones and other equipment to fight with the enemy for more than 4 hours, repelling the enemy's repeated charge to the main peak of Baiyun Mountain.

In this blockade battle, the 447th Regiment of our army and the US 25th Division fought fiercely for 11 days and nights, exchanged 344 casualties for 1200 lives of the US army, defended the main peak of Baiyun Mountain, achieved the purpose of blocking, and won the final victory. He was one of the more than 20 surviving soldiers who died more than 100 of the more than 120 soldiers in the 5th Company, and was also seriously wounded, reaching the fifth degree of disability. In this blockade battle, the 5th company he belonged to was awarded the first class of collective merit, and he himself was also honored with first class merit, and the advanced deeds were published by the Volunteer Army Pictorial in 1951, and two commemorative medals were awarded. On May 28, 1951, the Political Department of the Chinese Volunteer Army awarded the 447th Regiment the honorary title of "Baiyun Mountain Regiment". Subsequently, the old hero won two medals of honor in the war to liberate the southwest and the struggle against bandits and hegemony. On July 22, 2013, the elderly were invited to participate in the "Celebration of the 60th Anniversary of the Victory in the Korean War" led by then Vice President Lee Won-chao, and received a commemorative medal and a certificate of honor.

He used the financial and accounting knowledge he had learned at the Provincial Invalides School when he joined the army at that time, picked up lights and fought at night, and wrote accounting textbooks without sleeping or eating.
After arduous efforts, he compiled the "agricultural receipt and payment cash accounting method", "senior society and social industry, canteen receipt and payment bookkeeping method" and other accounting methods, was used as accounting training course textbooks, has trained more than 2,000 accountants, the teaching materials he compiled are practical, easy to learn, easy to understand, praised by the superior leaders, and popularized and used in the county, which played a great role in rural financial management at that time, and also cultivated a large number of financial accounting professionals. Contributed to the economic development of the county.
"The key to doing a good job lies in innovation" is a sentence that Zhang Geng often hangs on his lips. From 1970 to 1973, he was transferred to the Chengwan Commune Finance Office as the director of the department, when he was in charge of the tax collection of 15 production teams in Yaohe. At the beginning of the work, the Yaohe Brigade generally had phenomena such as confusion in accounts and tax evasion, which brought great difficulties to the tax collection work. In view of this situation, Zhang Geng submitted a report on rural tax work to the county tax and financial management departments, entitled "Democratic Financial Management, Increasing State Tax revenue." In 1971, with the consent of the county competent department, the method of "democratic financial management and tax increase" was promoted and used on a pilot basis in 15 production teams of the Yaohe Brigade. The tax revenue in that year increased by 3 times compared with 1970, and was well received by the majority of members. In 1972, the measure was popularized and used in 13 brigades of Chengwan Commune, and after the promotion, the tax amount of the whole commune reached 36,000 yuan in 1972, exceeding the national tax plan and collecting 10,000 yuan more than the original plan. In 1973, the method of "democratic financial management and increasing taxation" was promoted and used in all communes in the county, and after the promotion, the county's tax revenue increased by more than 200,000 yuan compared with before the promotion. In the same year, the measures were popularized and used in the Nanyang area, and a commendation meeting for advanced units and advanced individuals was held in the Nanyang area, and the units and individuals to which he belonged were commended, and Zhang Geng, as an advanced representative, made a typical speech at the meeting.
Small posts are big dedication. Zhang Geng successively worked in Ping's Agricultural Technology Extension Station, Hongyihe Finance Institute, Tongbai County Foundry and other units, and went through the procedures for leaving in December 1992. After having this idea, the old man immediately took action, ran in many ways to appeal, had paid for it himself many times, and the then director of the county civil affairs bureau went to the provincial city of Zhengzhou, asked the relevant departments for the project to approve the project, and strived for funds for the construction of the Tongbai Hero Monument and the Martyrs' Cemetery. The second phase of the project was completed in April 2003. The Tongbai Martyrs Cemetery began preparations in 2014 and is now basically completed. Nowadays, when the old man sees that his wish has finally been fulfilled, he can't help but sigh with emotion: "The motherland has not forgotten the heroes who sacrificed!" I hope that young people often come to these places to see that today's happy life is bought by countless martyrs who threw their heads and spilled their blood!"
