From 13:00 to 17:30 p.m. on October 6, 2024, under the organization and coordination of the Dalian Youth Ecological Environment Lecturer Group, more than 60 adolescent parent-child families and volunteers jointly carried out a public welfare science popularization action of exploring the ecological environment of natural oyster reef in the Dalian Heishi Reef Beach Wetland.
The instructor of the action was Ren Zengying, a well-known environmental protection volunteer, who followed the action plan, and she carefully led the children to walk in the tidal wetlands around the Black Rock Reef. Combined with the importance and challenges of water environmental protection, as well as the protection of the national first-class endangered species of the western Pacific spotted seal and the national second-class endangered species of the East Asian finless porpoise, as well as the protection of endangered bird species in Dalian, and the status and protection of natural oyster reef ecosystems, she gave a more systematic explanation.
The importance of water environmental protection lies in the fact that water is the source of life, one of the basic needs of human life, closely related to economic development, related to the maintenance of ecological balance and biodiversity, and related to the response to global climate change. Through water purification, water conservation and other technologies, the rational use of water resources can be realized.
October 4 is the World Animal Day, as the vice president of the Yueyang Finless Porpoise Conservation Association in Hunan Province, Ren Zengying did not forget the mission, in the coastal wetland, to the members who participated in the event focused on the uniqueness of spotted seals, East Asian finless porpoises, black-faced spoonbills, yellow-billed egrets and other animals, and interacted with the children to ask questions about this.
Teacher Ren Zengying's old friend, Zhou Tiantian, the initiator of the "Follow the Wild Goose to Migration" public welfare project in Changsha, Hunan Province, happened to be doing bird surveys in Dalian, and he told the story of bird migration.
During the whole exploration activity, everyone experienced the process of low tide, from the beginning of the Black Rock Reef surrounded by seawater, to the tidal wetland after the low tide was completely presented in front of them, and the children's joy was indescribable. Under the guidance of Mr. Ren, we carefully observed the landscape and landform of Black Rock Reef, learned about different sea erosion landforms such as sea stacks, sea cliffs, sea erosion platforms, sea erosion ditches, sea erosion arch bridges, etc., and also distinguished the different sea accumulation landforms.
Dalian has always been known for its "oyster flavor". During this exploration, everyone had a clear understanding of the concept of "natural oyster reef ecosystem", as well as the important ecological value of the oyster reef ecosystem and the current degradation crisis.
The shores of the Black Rock Reef are bedrock coasts, which are made up of hard rocks. The coastline is tortuous and curvature, with headlands (pointed lands jutting into the sea) alternating with bays; The headland protrudes seaward and the bay sinks deep into the land. From an ecological point of view, the natural oyster reef ecosystem, also known as the "temperate coral reef", is ecologically valuable. At present, it is still under the cover of mangroves, coral reefs, and seagrass beds, which is relatively lonely and has low public awareness. Its main ecological service function is to provide shelter for a large number of marine life, but also to protect the coastline from erosion and reduce the loss of marine disasters.
Since July 2023, Ren Zengying has designed a lesson plan with the framework of "The "Red, Green and Blue" Symphony of Oyster Reef Ecosystem", highlighting the action principle of "red patriotism, green ecology, and blue faith", organically combining oyster reef protection with marine ecological civilization construction, and helping the coastal wetland protection of "Beautiful China".
In the coastal intertidal zone, parents and children are seriously looking for the treasure in their hearts. "Teacher, there's a bunch of little crabs here!" "What's here?" Surprises and questions again and again reveal everyone's interest in this tidal flat, and constantly improve their ability to understand things in thinking. They learned to distinguish between common seaweeds, as well as shellfish and snails, and gained a new understanding of marine biodiversity.
Through this exploration activity, parents, children and volunteers were given a new experience and re-acquainted themselves with the habitat around Black Rock Reef, especially for the high school volunteers who participated in the event, they also re-acquainted themselves with their hometown of Dalian.
"Cherish wetlands and live in harmony with nature" and comprehensively enhance the public's awareness of marine ecological civilization is an important way to drive the public to participate in biodiversity conservation.
