The application of artificial intelligence (AI) in analysing general practitioner (GP) records has led to a significant increase in cancer case detection rates. GP clinics using the "C the Signs" AI tool have seen cancer detection rates rise from 58.7% to 66.0%. The tool examines a patient's medical history, test results, prescriptions, and other personal characteristics such as age, family history, and zip code to identify potential cancer risk.
Leverage artificial intelligence to assist in improving cancer diagnosis recommendations
The "C the Signs" AI tool not only collates patient-related medical information, but also encourages GPs to ask about new symptoms. By detecting patterns in the data indicating a higher risk for a particular type of cancer, the tool recommends appropriate tests or clinical pathways for a patient's referral. The AI system has been implemented in around 1,400 clinics in England, covering around 15% of clinics, and was successfully tested in 35 clinics in the east of England in May 2021, serving 420,000 patients.
