The third phase expansion project of Baiyun Airport is the largest reconstruction and expansion project in the history of China's civil aviation airport construction, and will become the world's largest single airport when it is completed and put into operation in 2025, with a leading passenger and cargo throughput scale in the world.
This project presents considerable challenges in terms of construction complexity, duration, and operational impact. Just the intricate relocation and transformation of transmission lines in the early stage is a difficult project. The relocation and reconstruction of transmission lines is to relocate the high-voltage circuits on the ground to power tunnels or underground pipe corridors, so as to make more space for the construction of resettlement houses, increase the area of construction land, and provide better construction conditions for the third phase expansion of the airport.

From December 21, 2021 to December 16, 2023, the project team and staff of CCCC Central South Bureau worked hard for more than 700 days and nights, overcoming various difficulties, successfully completing the relocation and reform task, and clearing the obstacles for the reconstruction and expansion project.

Work together to overcome difficult construction tasks
Du Guotao, the project manager, has 15 years of work experience in the construction line, and has presided over the management of various projects such as highways, urban railways, and power tunnel corridors. The length of the new tunnel of the relocation project is 5437.08 meters, which does not seem to be long, but due to the wide range of points, complex geology and tight construction period, it poses a huge test to the contractor's mobilization and coordination ability and organization of construction ability, and also makes Du Guotao feel a great responsibility.
A total of 12 working shafts are set up in the new tunnel, passing through obstacles such as national highways, other projects under construction, rural self-built houses, farmland, rivers, fish ponds, companies, and garbage transfer stations along the way; The surrounding environment of some working wells is complex, with large flow of people and vehicles, and busy business; Near ditches, village roads, schools, street lamp lines, high-voltage poles, and power lines; Close to municipal pipelines such as cables, gas pipelines, rainwater, communications, etc.; The construction involves demolition, greening relocation, traffic relief, ditch lane change, rain and sewage drainage pipeline relocation and other work, and the construction difficulty is not trivial.
In order to ensure the safety and quality of pipe jacking construction, in October 2021, Du Guotao and Chief Engineer Yang Dejin took the lead in setting up the "Nansui Endeavor" QC team to brainstorm and work together to solve the technical quality problems in the construction of the project and improve the construction management ability of the project.

After a variety of construction scheme comparison, Du Guotao finally decided to use the "pipe jacking method + open cut method" construction. Among them, the length of the pipe jacking tunnel accounts for three-fifths, which is the highlight of the tunnel project, including difficult construction such as crossing rivers, houses, and roads. Since taking over the project, Du Guotao has led the technical team to race against time, exchanging technical plans with pipe jacking experts during the day, consulting various literature and reviewing at night, discussing the details of the plan all night, and polishing the construction plan that meets the actual conditions little by little.
In terms of pipe jacking construction, Du Guotao led the project team to summarize and compile a set of construction methods that can be promoted and used for reference, won 2 first prizes for QC team achievements, and won 3 utility model patent authorizations, which achieved a highlight of the project's technical quality management.

In order to ensure the completion of the earthwork excavation and main structure construction of the 2#-3# working shaft of the power tunnel before the rainy season, Du Guotao led the commando team to mobilize resources in many ways, give full play to the vanguard role of party members, and invested more than 300 operators during the peak period, and the commando captain and deputy captain took turns to guide and organize the construction on site, and finally completed the task in less than 40 days, ensuring the smooth operation of the project, and was highly affirmed and praised by the Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Housing and Urban-Rural Development.

Under the leadership of the project manager and chief engineer, the team overcame the difficulties of construction, the delay in site handover, and the tight construction period caused by the epidemic and the rainy season, ensuring the steady progress of the project.
