On the afternoon of May 15, an expert seminar on "High-quality Development of the Oriental Hub and Surrounding Areas" was held at the Pudong Urban Planning and Public Art Center. The seminar was hosted by the Pudong New Area Planning and Natural Resources Bureau and undertaken by the Pudong New Area Planning and Design Institute.
The gateway to the Asia-Pacific aviation hub with global reach
According to the planning objectives, the Oriental Hub and its surrounding areas will be built into an Asia-Pacific aviation hub gateway that radiates the world, an important anchor to promote domestic and international dual circulation, a core hub serving the Yangtze River Delta region and an important engine to boost Shanghai's high-quality development.

The Oriental Hub and its surrounding areas are located in the central part of Pudong, involving Zhuqiao, Chuansha, Huinan, Xuanqiao, Laogang and other towns, with a total area of about 510 square kilometers from Chuanyang River in the north, Hulu Expressway in the west, Dazhi River in the south, and coastline in the east. With Pudong International Airport and Shanghai East Railway Station as the core, the region will give full play to the strategic role of super projects in driving the high-quality development of megacities based on the integrated development of stations and cities and the linkage of regional towns.

Wu Jiang pointed out that from the perspective of the flow of people and logistics that the geographical location of Shanghai Pudong can bear, there is still a lot of room for improvement in the current existing flow, which needs to be achieved by further enhancing the status of the oriental hub in the global pattern. Taking Dubai as an example, it does not have a port itself, and air and land transportation are not developed, but it has made full use of its unique advantages at the crossroads of the world's north-south traffic and east-west traffic to make itself a hub in the world. Today, Dubai's airport is the most prosperous airport in the world, and the UAE is a global logistics hub.
"Why can the Eastern Hub be positioned so high? It is because the status of China as a whole in the world's economic pattern is getting higher and higher, accounting for an increasing proportion; At the same time, China's own market and its own demand are also increasing. Such a huge international circulation and a huge domestic circulation are added together, and the Eastern Hub is actually the junction of these two major cycles, which has a great role. ”
Comprehensive development, breaking through the end of the city
Tang Zilai, a professor at Tongji University's School of Architecture and Urban Planning, noted that with the construction of the Oriental Hub, the relationship between Pudong and Hongqiao is being discussed continuously. "I think that Pudong and Hongqiao are two wings, and if we want to fly together, we must see the difference between the two wings. A link to the world, a revitalized hinterland. In the future, whether it is through high-speed rail or other forms of transportation, we must do a good job of connecting the two, so as to truly realize the efficient coordination of internal and external dual circulation. ”
Around 2007, with the development of the Hongqiao hub, the Shanghai branch of the China Academy of Urban Planning and Design was established. Dean Sun Juan believes that the internal logic of Hongqiao's development in the past 17 years actually has great reference significance for the construction of today's Oriental Hub, especially in how to balance the relationship between regional logic, transportation logic and urban logic.
"Pudong International Airport connects Shanghai and even China to the east and overseas. On the map of China, if there is no such oriental hub, it will always be an end. Chen Xiaohong, a professor at the School of Traffic and Transportation Engineering at Tongji University, said that the Oriental Hub will bring a major breakthrough to the Pudong Railway, which is not only a transportation function, but more importantly, this transportation function can become an important engine for the redevelopment of Pudong and even Shanghai in the new development process of the mainland. To the west, the hub connects with the entire Shanghai and the Yangtze River Delta; leap north across the Yangtze River; Leap south over Hangzhou Bay; The breakthrough of one river and one bay will bring value to the sustainable development of the entire region.
The planning and construction of the Eastern Hub and the surrounding areas will also bring more opportunities for future development. Daniel Zhang, vice president of the Shanghai Development and Reform Research Institute, believes that in the future, it will not only increase passenger flow, but also help solve the bottleneck in river, sea, land, air and rail combined transportation, promote industrial linkage, promote early implementation and trial, and reflect policy value and policy advantages in the entry and exit of personnel and goods.
