The difference between an isolation switch and a load switch/vacuum circuit breaker

1. Disconnecting switch

The difference between an isolation switch and a load switch/vacuum circuit breaker

The disconnector does not have a special arc extinguishing device, and its arc extinguishing ability is weak, so it is generally used to isolate the voltage, and the circuit that has been cut off by the short circuit and has no load current flow is turned on or cut off, and cannot be used to turn on or cut off the load current. The main purpose of the disconnector is to isolate the power supply voltage when the electrical equipment needs to be shut down for maintenance, and cause an obvious disconnection point to ensure the safety of the maintenance personnel.

2. Load switch

The difference between an isolation switch and a load switch/vacuum circuit breaker

The load switch is a type of opening and closing switch with a special arc extinguishing contact, arc extinguishing device and spring circuit breaker. Structurally, a load switch is similar to an isolation switch (both have a visible disconnect point when it is open), but it can be used to open and close circuits, which is similar to a circuit breaker. However, a circuit breaker can control any circuit, while a load switch can only turn the load current on and off, or the overload current, so it is only used to cut off and turn on the circuit under normal conditions, and cannot be used to break the short-circuit fault current. However, it is required that its structure can pass the fault current of the short-circuit time without damage. Since the arc extinguishing device and contact of the load switch are designed according to the cut-off and turn-on load current, the load switch should be used in conjunction with the high-voltage fuse in most cases, and the latter will be responsible for cutting off the short-circuit fault current. The frequency of opening and closing and the operating life of load switches tend to be higher than those of circuit breakers.
