Q: What was your exam preparation experience like?

Personally, I think that school planning is the most important. A good route can avoid a lot of pitfalls. That's the lesson I learned when I was rushing for my first year exams. Of course, the target school does not need to be set too early, and it is generally determined before April of that year. Then it's the best for you.

However, it is important to listen to the advice of the teachers in the school, and at the same time, you must actually put in the effort to accumulate exam experience, so that you can constantly adjust according to your own situation, and finally find the most suitable route for yourself.

For example, in addition to Kyoto University of the Arts' photographs and Tamamei's prints, I also prepared a basic design for Musashimi. However, in September, I felt that I was personally more suitable for Tamamei's printmaking, and if I were to prepare for both Tama and Musashino, and the two were completely different disciplines, I would probably lose more than I would lose. So I gave up on Musami's application. I put all my time into preparing Tama's prints.

If it's difficult, the failure in the first year is really a blow, so it's important to adjust your mentality. The second year went pretty well.

Q: What questions were asked during the interview? What was the atmosphere like, and how many professors were present? What are your interview tips?

In the case of Tama interviews, almost all subject teachers will be present. It was quite easy for me to interview Tama because I had talked to the professor twice before, and I already had a qualified school. Tama's questions are actually based on the works he brought.

The professor will first ask me to introduce the works one by one (because of the limited time and I bring a lot of works, so it is best to pick the most proud works), and after you have finished the introduction, the professor will make some questions based on the works and introductions.

At the end, I will ask some basic questions, such as what I want to do in the future, which art preparatory school to take, what school I am qualified for now (honest answers are best), and some questions about myself.

At Kyoto University of the Arts, I took the experience class of photo コース and the entrance examination for international students. Of course, both qualified. Experiential teaching is in a group mode, generally five students vs two professors, and the questions asked are basically not related to their own discipline.

Unlike Tamami, Kyoto art is more about Japanese language ability. Therefore, the content of the answer should be interesting and unexpected, and of course honesty is the best. If you are an international student, the interview will be online, and you will not ask any questions about your work because you have already reviewed your portfolio once.

To be honest, it's a 15-minute Japanese speaking test. Generally speaking, the first step is to make a self-recommendation critique. Then the teacher (the interviewer is not a professor in your major, but seems to be a teacher who specializes in interviewing) will ask questions based on your self-recommendation and criticism.

At the end, questions will be asked based on the statement of reasons for aspirations. In addition, there are some regular questions, such as why you are admitted to our school, what you want to do in the future, etc.

Generally speaking, the interview at a private American university in Japan is more about Japanese expression skills. Even though Japanese grammar and vocabulary are not high, it is important to be able to convey them. Professors at schools like Tama are more concerned with the work itself and your understanding and opinion on top of that. Therefore, it is very important to be able to fully introduce and understand the work in Japanese.
