General Wei Guoqing is the only PLA general to be elected to the Politburo three times. At the age of fourteen, he was exposed to revolutionary ideas, and at the age of fifteen he led the youth into a peasant movement, and in 1929 he participated in the Baise Uprising. In September 1913, Wei Guoqing was born in Nongying Village, Donglan County, Guangxi. The family made a living from farming and lived in poverty, which made Wei Guoqing accustomed to a hard life since he was a child. At a very young age, he began to help the family chop firewood, herd cattle, and plant rice, and did all kinds of farm work, accumulating a lot of hard-working qualities.
As the years passed, the situation in the country became increasingly volatile. The young Wei Guoqing came into contact with the idea of democratic revolution by chance, which stimulated his feelings for his family and country, and the seeds of revolution sprouted in his heart.
In 1928, the peasants of Donglan County launched a revolutionary struggle out of anger, and Wei Guoqing did not hesitate to join it. Together with his comrades, he attacked the county town and achieved remarkable results. This revolutionary struggle made Wei Guoqing realize that only revolution can save the country and the people, and his determination to revolution was strengthened.
At the age of 16, Wei Guoqing joined the Chinese Communist Youth League and began to shoulder the responsibility of leading the local people to form a self-defense force to fight against reactionary forces. Although young, he was fearless and always charged at the forefront. The brave and fearless Wei Guoqing participated in the Baise Uprising, and as a member of the vanguard army, he successfully captured the county town of Donglan, paving the way for the subsequent Baise Uprising. This outstanding performance also attracted the attention of Deng Gong, and because of his outstanding ability, he was transferred to Deng Gong's side as a guard.
By Deng Gong's side, Wei Guoqing not only learned more revolutionary experience, but also gave full play to his talent in military affairs. During the War of Liberation, Wei Guoqing became one of the very few high-ranking generals who commanded three columns for a long time. During his tenure as commander of the Northern Soviet Corps, he commanded three columns. During this time, he led his troops to fight actively, annihilating more than 25,000 enemy troops in only four months, and made great contributions to the victory of the Liberation War. Through his unique tactical and strategic vision, Wei Guoqing made full use of every fighter and demonstrated outstanding organizational and command skills. During his tenure as commander of the Northern Jiangsu Corps, he relied on his accurate judgment of the situation and flexible and mobile strategic deployment to enable the three columns to be like a commander on the battlefield, fully demonstrating his commanding ability. Under his leadership, the troops always maintained high morale and strong combat effectiveness, and became an important force for the annihilation of enemy forces. Wei Guoqing's command ability and keen insight into the battlefield situation made him highly praised by his comrades-in-arms in the War of Liberation. His leadership and tactical wisdom paved the way for victory in the battle and the founding of New China.
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the plan was to send Wei Guoqing to Europe as an ambassador, but this plan was shelved by Chairman Mao. Chairman Mao made other arrangements for him, instructing him to go to Vietnam to serve as the general adviser to the military advisory group of the Viet Cong leader Ho Chi Minh. In this important role, Wei Guoqing, Chen Geng and others assisted Vietnam in commanding the historic battle of Dien Bien Phu, in which more than 16,000 enemy troops were destroyed. The Battle of Dien Bien Phu was known as the "Battle for the Founding of Socialist Vietnam" because of its decisive impact on the fate of Vietnam. Wei Guoqing rose to fame and fame with his victory in this battle.
During his time in Vietnam, Wei Guoqing not only helped develop strategic planning as a military adviser, but also actively fought alongside Vietnamese commanders. He demonstrated deep military knowledge and excellent strategic insight to help the Vietnamese forces improve their combat effectiveness. In 1955, Wei Guoqing received an appointment to serve as governor of Guangxi Province and deputy secretary of the provincial party committee. Some people objected to this, arguing that he had worked in the army for a long time and had adapted to the rhythm of the army, and should continue to stay in the army. Under the chairman's affirmation, Wei Guoqing resolutely returned to Guangxi and began to lead this land he was familiar with.
Soon after his arrival, he quickly discovered that Guangxi had a serious problem: despite its proximity to the South China Sea, it did not have an outlet to the sea, which was extremely detrimental to the development of the economy and foreign relations. With his keen observation and firm determination, Wei Guoqing set out to find a solution. He worked hard to coordinate all parties and actively seek policy support, and finally in 1965 the Qinlian area was reassigned to Guangxi. This decision has opened a new door for Guangxi's foreign trade and greatly enhanced Guangxi's status in the national economic structure.
This initiative has not only had a positive impact on Guangxi's economic development, but also brought new development opportunities to the people of the region. Wei Guoqing demonstrated his commitment and vision as an outstanding leader. This great achievement has become a major contribution made by Wei Guoqing to his hometown, and has also laid a solid foundation for the future development of Guangxi.
In the late 70s, Wei Guoqing received great trust from Deng Xiaoping, was appointed director of the General Political Department and a member of the Military Commission, and was elected to the Politburo. As the newly appointed director of the General Political Department, Wei Guoqing has assumed tremendous responsibilities, not only to coordinate the work of the General Political Department, but also to participate in the major policy decisions of the Central Military Commission and to comprehensively manage all aspects of the military, from political education and military discipline to the internal affairs of the army.
Wei Guoqing stressed the importance of discipline and ideological education in the army to ensure that the army always maintains a high degree of combat readiness and a firm political stand. He actively promoted the ideological building of officers and men at all levels and worked hard to build the troops into a reliable force loyal to the party and the country. As a member of the Central Military Commission, Wei Guoqing, with his rich combat experience and outstanding leadership skills, has provided valuable insights for the strategic planning and building of the armed forces.
In the work of the Politburo, Wei Guoqing actively participated in the formulation and implementation of major national policies, brought the demeanor of military people into the political arena, upheld the spirit of pragmatism, and provided a unique perspective for the country's political decision-making. Wei Guoqing's outstanding performance in the revolution and battle, as well as his firm belief in the revolutionary cause, won him the trust of his colleagues and made his position in the Politburo seem to be justified.
During Wei Guoqing's 20 years in power in Guangxi, he could be seen busy in everything from heavy industry to light industry, from comprehensive universities to junior colleges. Whether it is adjusting the industrial structure, improving production efficiency, or promoting the reform of the education system, Wei Guoqing has always taken the overall development of Guangxi as his top priority. He personally went to the grassroots level, inspected factories and schools, communicated with local cadres and the masses, and grasped first-hand information to formulate more realistic development strategies.
To this day, many people in Guangxi still mention Wei Guoqing's important contribution to local development. His positive deeds have enabled Guangxi to make remarkable progress in all aspects, and people are well aware of Wei Guoqing's efforts for Guangxi's development. It is precisely because of his foresight and diligence that Guangxi has been able to develop rapidly since then, laying the foundation for today's brilliant achievements.
On June 14, 1989, General Wei Guoqing passed away in Beijing at the age of 76. He remained honest and upright throughout his life, and after his death, a memorial was set up in Guangxi Province for him. In the minds of the people in his hometown, he is not only an outstanding person dedicated to the development of his hometown, but also a secretary close to the people. Whether in the government or in leading positions, he has always maintained the simple style of the working people, and has shown the moral qualities of a Communist Party member in the subtleties.
