April 15 is the first day of the National Cancer Prevention and Treatment Publicity Week, and the kick-off meeting of the 2024 Medical Science Jing Chuxing Cancer Prevention and Treatment Publicity Week was held at the Proton Medical Center of Union Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology. At the meeting, the hospital announced that the largest proton medical center in Central China has completed equipment commissioning and will start clinical trials in the second half of the year, recruiting 47 trial patients for the whole society.
The event was hosted by the Hubei Medical Association and the Science Popularization Branch of the Hubei Provincial Medical Association, and undertaken by the Union Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Union Hospital), aiming to improve the awareness of cancer prevention and control in the whole society, popularize anti-cancer health knowledge, and create a good atmosphere for cancer prevention and anti-cancer for the whole people. Wang Bo, Deputy Secretary-General of Hubei Provincial Medical Association, and Huang Xiaogang, Vice President of Wuhan Medical Association, both highly affirmed this popular science activity, and hoped that the member units of the Society would focus on publicity and extensive mobilization to improve the public's awareness and attention to cancer prevention and treatment, and play an active role in promoting the construction of healthy Hubei.
Sun Hui, Chairman of the Science Popularization Branch of Hubei Medical Association and Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Union Hospital, delivered a welcome speech and presided over the event. He stressed that the theme of the 2024 Publicity Week is "Comprehensive Policies for Scientific Cancer Prevention", which is a specific action in response to the decision-making and deployment of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on cancer prevention and control, and an important measure to promote the development strategy of "Healthy China".

Yu Jinming, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary President of Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences and President of Shandong Cancer Hospital, Professor Zhang Tao, Director and Secretary of the Cancer Center of Union Medical College Hospital and Vice President of the Oncologist Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, Professor Li Xingrui, Director of the Department of Breast and Thyroid Surgery of Tongji Hospital, and Professor Li Yi of Wuhan Mental Health Center, brought a feast of science to patients and the audience around the prevention and treatment of tumor diseases, so that everyone can correctly understand cancer, participate in cancer prevention and anti-cancer, and improve the quality of life of patients.
At the kick-off meeting, Professor Yang Kunyu, Deputy Director of the Cancer Center and Director of the Department of Oncology of Union Medical College Hospital, announced the latest progress of proton therapy and released the recruitment plan for clinical proton therapy experiments. Since the official start of construction in July 2020, the Proton Medical Center of Union Medical College Hospital has successively completed the construction of the main ward, the hoisting of the proton accelerator, the release of the beam, the establishment of the tumor precision laboratory and other key nodes, and the relevant equipment has been debugged to meet the clinical application standards, and the medical team is all in place, in accordance with the requirements of relevant departments and international practices, clinical trials need to be completed before the formal clinical treatment is carried out, with the aim of further ensuring the safety and effectiveness of the treatment.
"This trial plans to recruit 47 cancer patients from the whole society. Yang Kunyu said that for eligible patients, the cost of proton therapy is free of charge, and it is expected that the effective rate of tumor treatment will exceed 95%. In addition, subsidies will be provided for the relevant examination expenses incurred during the screening period and follow-up period, including laboratory examinations, imaging examinations, transportation subsidies, etc., as specified in the research protocol.
Zhang Tao, secretary of the Cancer Center of Union Medical College Hospital, said that the center, as the largest cancer hospital in the country, was awarded the first medical proton accelerator configuration license in central and southern China in 2019, and the center is also the first batch of standardized training bases for "radiation oncology therapy" residents of the National Health Commission, and in 2023, the proton radiotherapy system was successfully launched, which marks a new "milestone" in the acceleration of tumor precision treatment.
At three o'clock in the afternoon of the same day, Academician Yu Jinming, the first academician in the field of radiotherapy in China, was a guest of the "Academician Lectures on National Health Courses" column jointly planned and launched by the Joint Office of Wuhan Medical and Health Association, Academician Chen Xiaoping's Health Science Popularization Studio, Hubei Radio and Television Health Exhibition Center and Union Hospital Affiliated to Huazhong University of Science and Technology.
The event not only set up the main venue in the Proton Medical Center of Union Medical College Hospital, but also set up branch venues in Wuhan, Jingzhou, Yichang and other cities, states and medical institutions to organize patients to watch the lecture synchronously, popularize anti-cancer health knowledge, comprehensively enhance the awareness of cancer prevention and control in the whole society, create a good atmosphere for cancer prevention and anti-cancer for the whole people, improve the early diagnosis rate and survival rate of cancer, and help healthy Hubei. Under the guidance of the Hubei Provincial Medical Association, the Science Popularization Branch was officially established in January 2024.
It is reported that the Science Popularization Branch of Hubei Medical Association aims to respond to the important strategy of healthy Hubei and healthy China, and actively promote the "323" campaign and the "Medical Science Popularization Jing Chu Xing" activities.
