Introduction

The book is the second volume of the fourth volume of "History of Chinese Religious Literature" edited by Professor Wu Guangzheng of the School of Arts and Humanities of Wuhan University. The author is Professor Zhang Peifeng of the School of Liberal Arts, Nankai University. "History of Chinese Religious Literature" is the result of the major project of the National Social Science Fund (15ZDB069), and was approved as "excellent" in March 2022.

The book provides an overall description and study of the development process, basic features, representative figures and important works of Buddhist literature in the Song Dynasty, which lasted for more than 300 years. Based on the research perspective of regarding Buddhism as an important part of Chinese culture and taking Song Dynasty Buddhist literature as an important part of the development of Song Dynasty literature, the book examines the historical motivation for the prosperity and development of Song Dynasty Buddhist literature from a cultural perspective. The trend of a high degree of integration between Taoism and Taoism has gradually established the cultural characteristics of Chinese Buddhism, which is an important manifestation of Buddhist writings, poems, etc., and the tendency of literati to become more and more obvious.

While practicing Buddhism, many monks created a huge number of literary works, or in other words, these literary works themselves were the main tools for spreading Buddhism and promoting Buddhism, and made their own unique contributions to the glory of literature throughout the Song Dynasty. A chronology of major events in Song Dynasty Buddhist literature and references are attached to the book.

This book argues that if the monk group is included in the perspective of the entire literary history of the Song Dynasty, then some existing evaluations and some "conclusions" of the development of Song Dynasty literature may need to be rewritten and re-examined.

In the process of writing, he adopted the method of combining total-score-total, which not only tried to reflect the overall appearance of Buddhist literary creation in the Song Dynasty, but also tried to have a more in-depth study of some important figures and works.

Chapters 1 and 2 of the general section provide an overview of the basic situation of Buddhist literature in the Song Dynasty and the basic situation of the creation of various sects, and then describe some important genres and themes of Buddhist literature in the Song Dynasty from the perspectives of praise, praise, poetry, essays, words, fu, quotations, and biographies. In the sub-discussion part, the representative figures with important symbolic significance and influence in the development of Buddhist literature in the Song Dynasty are selected, such as the Nine Monks, Shanzhao, Chongxian, Yanshou, Qisong, Zhiyuan, Zunshi, Daoqian, Huihong, Zonggao, Zhengjue, etc., and discuss them in special chapters.

One of the characteristics of the Song Dynasty is that the masters of Buddhism and the masters of Buddhist literature almost completely overlapped and coincided, which was also quite different from other dynasties such as the Tang Dynasty, which may indicate that literature also had an extremely important significance in the development of Buddhism in the Song Dynasty.

Epilogue

Around 2011, Professor Wu Guangzheng of Wuhan University contacted me and asked me to join the research team of "General History of Chinese Religious Literature" organized by him, and undertake the research and writing of "History of Buddhist Literature in the Song Dynasty".

At that time, it was not a "national project", and there was basically no funding, but Professor Guangzheng had a set of ambitious research plans and goals, and at the same time, he had initially organized a research team. I was so impressed by his spirit that it didn't take long for me to reply to him and agree to join.

Personally, I originally wanted to carry out my own research work mainly on Song Dynasty Buddhist literature in the future, at least in terms of goals, which is consistent with the arrangement of the research group.

Due to some previous accumulation, my manuscript was relatively smooth, and two years later, at the end of 2013, the first draft was basically completed. In the more than ten years since, the research project presided over by Professor Guangzheng has always persevered and advanced in the face of difficulties. I have also come to realize that it is becoming more and more difficult to publish research on religious issues, including religious literature, and to publish books.

Fortunately, through the unremitting efforts of Professor Guangzheng and all the participants, this research project was finally approved as a major national social science planning project in 2015, and with this "name" and certain financial support, the progress of the project has accelerated, and by 2021, more than 20 manuscripts have been basically completed, and have passed the project acceptance with excellent results.

Since then, the process of turning from a "problem" to a "result" has continued to be difficult, and it can be said that it has gone through many hardships. I also sincerely realized how arduous it was to organize the compilation of such a large-volume, multi-volume "General History of Religious Literature."

Fortunately, the research project, which has been launched since 2007, is finally coming to an end. Most of the works have been repeatedly polished, especially under the strict "checks" of Professor Guangzheng, and have entered the publication process one after another.

Although my little book has been revised several times in the following 10 years, it is mainly written and a number of expressions, and the basic documents, opinions, and appearances are still more than 10 years ago, and in today's "ever-changing" world, it should be called an "old work".

On the occasion of the imminent printing of this book, I would like to write these words as a little "testimonial". I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Professor Guangzheng for designing and organizing such a huge research project, which provides a unique perspective for the study of the general history of Chinese literature, and I believe that many chapters of this series of books will have a refreshing value and significance for the history of Chinese literature, and I sincerely appreciate the friendship and friendship that I have formed with many members of the research group in the past ten years. There is no end to academics, but there should be an end or an end in life, I have always thought so.
