The prosperity of Buddhism from the Northern and Southern Dynasties to the Sui and Tang dynasties profoundly affected the historical process of political, economic and cultural development at that time. In the 50s of the last century, more than 2,000 pieces of white stone Buddhist statues from the Northern Wei Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty were unearthed at the site of Xiude Temple in Quyang County, Hebei Province, which is an important witness of this history, and the stone statues unearthed from Longxing Temple in Qingzhou, Shandong Province, and Ten Thousand Buddha Temple in Chengdu, Sichuan, are known as the three major archaeological discoveries of Chinese Buddhist temples in the 20th century, and are well-known at home and abroad.

Quyang is rich in white stone, the texture is firm, the color is as white as snow, delicate and smooth, and the carving has a long history. During the Sui and Tang dynasties of the Northern Dynasties, Quyang became one of the centers of Buddhist statues, the theme of the statue was closely combined with the Buddhist ideology, there were Shakya Buddha, Shakya and Duobao Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, Maitreya Bodhisattva, Guanyin Bodhisattva, Thinking Bodhisattva and Vajra Lux, Heavenly King, offering music, etc., the artistic style is unique, solemn and beautiful, vivid and expressive.

The Northern Dynasties made extensive use of openwork carving techniques, representing a major school of Buddhist statue making at that time. A large number of chronological vows provide a wealth of information for the study of Buddhist statues and beliefs. This exhibition is another important exhibition of medieval Buddhist stone carving art in Shenzhen Museum, following the exhibition of Buddhist statues unearthed in Longxing Temple in Qingzhou, Shandong Province and Wanfo Temple in Chengdu, Sichuan, and a total of 84 pieces of exquisite statues unearthed in Xiude Temple in Quyang collected by the Palace Museum. This is the first concentrated display of Quyang Baishi Buddhist statues in the collection of the Palace Museum, and it is also the first large-scale special exhibition cooperated by our museum and the Palace Museum. It is believed that this exhibition will actively promote the study of Buddhist art in the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui and Tang dynasties, and will also help the audience to have an in-depth understanding of ancient Buddhist art and culture, and provide useful reference for the inheritance and development of traditional culture.

Eastern Wei Dynasty Guo Yuanbin made a stone Bodhisattva statue

Height 48.5 cm

The Bodhisattva wears a crown on his head, wears a monk's branch inside, and wears a shawl on the outside, which is worn on the abdomen and folded until the elbow hangs. The right hand holds the lotus bud up, and the left hand holds the peach-shaped object drooping, and stands upright on the upright lotus seat. The pedestal relief incarnates the boy holding the incense burner, the outside is the opposite squatting lion, and the lion's spine is carved to stand on the lotus flower, the form is quite novel. The back of the pedestal is engraved with a vow: "On October 5 of the third year of Wuding, the Buddha disciple Guo Yuanbin made a jade statue for his father's ex-wife in a district (body), seven feet high, the deceased was born in the sky, and now he is rich, Maitreya will be three meetings, and he will become a Buddha for a while." ”
