"We have encountered various bottlenecks in the process of industrial application. In the early stage of the project, Zhang Wei encountered unprecedented problems. According to reports, the raw material composition of the project has changed in the production, and the separation of gallium, germanium and impurity ions after extraction is not complete, resulting in low output of germanium products, and the gallium recycling production process has never been able to get through. In an interview with reporters, Zhang Wei recalled, "This project was independently developed by us, and I was the person in charge of the project site. ”
In 2016, the comprehensive recycling workshop of Danxia Smelter was established. In the face of various technical problems and talent reserve problems in the early stage, Zhang Wei took the initiative to ask Ying to create the "Zhang Wei Innovation Studio". In recent years, the innovation studio has closely focused on the comprehensive recovery project of gallium, germanium, copper and other valuable metals associated with the zinc smelting process, and carried out in-depth technological innovation activities in view of the shortcomings in the process and the bottlenecks and difficulties in production and operation, and achieved outstanding results in process optimization, energy saving and consumption reduction, safety and environmental protection, and cost reduction.

From a grassroots technician to a deputy chief engineer, along the way, Zhang Wei led the team to conduct repeated experiments, accumulate efforts to tackle key problems, overcome a number of cutting-edge technical problems, made technological breakthroughs, realized the efficient and high-yield recovery of gallium and germanium, successfully cracked the code of efficient extraction of gallium and germanium from sulfuric acid system, made up for the technical gap in the industry, and helped Zhongjin Lingnan become the first zinc smelting enterprise in China to innovatively apply sulfuric acid system to realize the full extraction and recovery of gallium germanium indium copper metal.
In 2021, the Innovation Studio was rated as the Guangdong Model Worker and Craftsman Talent Innovation Studio for its outstanding performance. In 2023, the four achievements of gallium and germanium comprehensive recycling in the Innovation Studio will be authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office for invention patents.
In Zhang Wei's work trajectory, persistence is the strongest pulse. As a leader in scientific research and technology, he has won the "National Hydrometallurgy Outstanding Youth Award", "National Nonferrous Metals Outstanding General Engineering Industry Contribution Award", "Shaoguan City's Most Beautiful Science and Technology Worker" and other honors.
