The data is based on the performance of IELTS scores in major cities in China from September 2022 to August 2023:
At that time, there were 8 cities in China with IELTS academic scores above 6.0. Shanghai has the highest average score of 6.17, followed by Beijing.
Just recently, at the official IELTS Annual Meeting, the official IELTS data for the whole year of 2023 showed that the number of cities with a score of 6.0 has increased significantly, reaching 37!!

Beijing, Anhui, Chongqing, Fujian, Guangdong, Hainan, Heilongjiang, Hubei, Hunan, Jilin, Jiangsu, Jiangxi, Liaoning, Shaanxi, Shanghai, Sichuan, Tianjin, Zhejiang
Not only that, but the official statistics also count the top 30 colleges and universities with the average total score of candidates in addition to the provinces.
The students of these institutions are all ranked in the band of 6.5 and above, and only one of them is Fudan University in the 7.0 bracket, while the 6.5 bracket includes 29 universities.

Big city pressure points? It's a rumor!
There is a saying among Chinese test takers that if you take the IELTS speaking test in different cities, you will get different scores, especially in big cities, where there is likely to be a phenomenon of "pressure score".
In fact, the rumor that big cities are overwhelmed and remote areas are given high scores (especially in speaking and writing) has long been self-defeating!
Through this data, it is not difficult to find that the IELTS scores in big cities, especially Beijing, Shanghai and other places, are significantly higher than those in other cities.
The grading criteria for all IELTS subjects are uniform, and the examiners are uniformly trained and monitored to ensure that they are judged according to a set of criteria. Therefore, the reason for the high score rate of these cities is mainly due to their own strength. If your IELTS level is weak, it will be difficult to get the ideal score even if you go to those so-called cities that will "produce high scores".

Every once in a while, the official IELTS body will conduct a business skills check on the examiners, and the examiners who are qualified in different regions (or countries) will randomly check each other.
