Recently, the dermatology department of Hunan Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine has seen a number of patients who have been bitten by ticks.
You may be unfamiliar with the name tick, spring and summer come, all kinds of grass and groves are hidden in a small tick, although the size is not big but the harm is not small, it may be in danger of death.
1. What is a tick? (How to identify a tick?)
Ticks, also called ticks, lie dormant on grassy plants in shallow hills or among the fur of animals such as livestock.
It can suck the blood of animals or humans, and when it is not sucking blood, it is small and shriveled, only the size of a mung bean, and there are also extremely fine ones the size of a grain of rice. After sucking up the blood, it is the size of a plump soybean, and the large tick can reach the size of a human fingernail.
2. Viruses carried by ticks
1. Babesiosis
It is a blood protozoal disease transmitted by Ixodes dives, which is a common disease in dogs, and the transmission time is 1~6 weeks, and the longest can be up to one month.
Main symptoms: jaundice, dyspnea, high anemia with hemoglobin and protein in the urine, chronic indirect intermittent fever.
2. Caim disease
A disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, the root of transmission: ticks, transmission time: 36~48 hours after attachment.
Main symptoms: swollen joints, lameness, fever, vomiting, kidney failure, scorpions, etc.
3. Rocky Mountain spotted fever
Transmission time of infectious tick-borne diseases caused by rickettsia: 5~20 hours after attachment.
Main symptoms: fever, decreased appetite, swollen or painful joints, depression.
3. The parasitic site of the tick
Ticks are often selective in the host's parasitic site, generally in locations with thin skin that are not easily disturbed, such as the neck, behind the ears, armpits, inner thighs, groin, etc. in humans or animals.
4. How to deal with tick bites correctly?
Ticks should not be patted, and should not be taken out by hard pinching, dead dragging, burning, etc., as it is easy to break the tick's mouthparts and stimulate the tick to secrete more sleeping fluid, increasing the possibility of infection.
April to October are the active months for ticks. Ticks bury their heads in the skin, sucking blood while secreting harmful substances. If not removed in time, it can cause skin diseases in mild cases and even life-threatening in severe cases.
Solution: When entering the tick-infested area, wear five tight clothes, long socks and boots, wear a protective hat, apply anti-repellent to the exposed parts, check each other when leaving, and do not take the tick out of the epidemic area.
If a tick bites into the skin tissue, use tweezers to grip the mouth or head of the tick as close to the skin as possible, and try to avoid squeezing the tick and lift the tick directly upward. Lifting the tick causes the skin to swell and create tension for eight seconds, and the tick releases the skin.
Place the tick in a plastic bag so that the person can take it with them when they go to the doctor, and wash the bite area with running water and soap.
Tips: If there is a known tick-borne disease in your area, it is recommended that the injured person seek medical attention as soon as possible.
