In the past, ascariasis was very common in mainland China, especially in rural areas, due to limited sanitation and people's health awareness.

The sixty-year-old woman never expected that being "targeted" by this parasite when she was young would make her suffer from illness for decades. After careful surgery by the expert team of hepatobiliary surgery of Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, he finally regained his health.

Ms. Tan, 63, from Chenzhou, Hunan Province, who lives in the countryside, vomited live roundworms more than once when she was young. Due to limited conditions, I have never taken anthelmintic medicine.

As an adult, Ms. Tan suffered from recurrent discomforts such as pain in her right upper abdomen, nausea, and vomiting. Every time I had an attack, I went to the health room for infusion, and I never went to the hospital for examination and standardized treatment.

In the past two years, because of the more frequent episodes of abdominal pain and vomiting, and the symptoms became more and more severe, Ms. Tan went to the local hospital for CT accompanied by her family, and the results showed that "multiple stones in the liver and bile ducts".

On the recommendation of a local doctor, he went to the Department of Hepatobiliary Surgery, Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, Deputy Chief Physician Sun Zengpeng, on March 11.

After a detailed medical history and examination information, the doctor told Ms. Tan that roundworms may be the "culprit" that caused her to develop liver and bile duct stones. This is because roundworms can easily form stones as the core of their carcasses or eggs after entering the bile ducts in the liver.

After being admitted to the Eighth Hepatobiliary Ward, Professor Wu Jinshu, the chief expert, Yi Weimin, the director of the Eighth Hepatobiliary Ward, and Sun Zengpeng, the deputy chief physician, carefully analyzed and discussed Ms. Tan's condition, and believed that the diagnosis of multiple stones in the right hepatic bile duct and hepatobiliary stenosis and obstruction was clear, and it was necessary to perform surgery to relieve the stenosis and remove the stones, while preserving the liver as much as possible, so as to reserve enough treatment space and room for her "fragile" liver.

After improving the preoperative examination, on March 18, under the guidance of Professor Wu Jinshu and Director Yi Weimin, Deputy Chief Physician Sun Zengpeng and others performed laparotomy surgery for Ms. Tan under general anesthesia.

During the operation, it was found that the patient's right liver was narrowed in the first to third grade hepatobiliary orifice, which meant that several gates into the liver were all blocked, and the first, second, and third degree hepatic ducts were cut step by step, and the stones were removed and the hepatobiliary pelvic drainage was established, and the operation was successfully completed in just over 1 hour, and there was almost no bleeding during the operation. After the reexamination, the choledoscopy showed that there was no residual stone.

"This operation is a perfect embodiment of our advanced concepts and techniques for dealing with hepatobiliary stones," said Professor Wu Jinshu, a well-known hepatobiliary surgeon and chief expert of Hunan Provincial People's Hospital.

On the basis of more than 40 years of treatment of tens of thousands of cases of hepatobiliary stones, the hepatobiliary surgery team of Hunan Provincial People's Hospital, led by Professor Wu Jinshu, has continuously explored and summarized, and compiled the diagnosis and treatment ideas, surgical treatment and other related experience into the "Hunan Expert Consensus on Comprehensive Diagnosis and Treatment of Hepatobiliary Stone Disease (2024 Edition)", and adopted the opinions of many hepatobiliary surgery experts in the province, which was published in the famous surgical journal "Chinese Journal of General Surgery" in mainland China (February 2024 issue), which has been recognized and respected by the majority of domestic peers, reflects that the "Hepatobiliary Hunan Army" led by Hunan Provincial People's Hospital is at the leading level in the diagnosis and treatment of hepatobiliary stone diseases in China, benefiting tens of thousands of patients inside and outside the province.
