A 13-year-old boy was diagnosed with lung cancer!

For cancer, many people have a common understanding that "cancer is a disease of old age". Especially for lung cancer patients, it is usually easy for people over 50 years old.

But in fact, the young age of cancer is not a new term. Chen Jinping, the leader of the thoracic pathology subspecialty of Ningbo Clinical Pathology Diagnosis Center, has just completed a pathological diagnosis not long ago, and the patient who was found to have early lung cancer is only 13 years old this year!

Xiao Lin, a 13-year-old boy from Ningbo, is in his second year of junior high school. Two months ago, Kobayashi went to the hospital for examination because of cough and chest tightness, and a CT scan of his lungs showed that there was a 0.9 cm ground-glass lung nodule in his right lung, which was a Lung-RADS class 4A pulmonary nodule.

Doctors thought that Kobayashi's lung nodule was ground-glass, nearly 1 centimeter, and it was possible that it was malignant. But considering his young age, it was recommended that he observe for a while.

However, two months later, when Kobayashi rechecked the lung CT, he found that the size of the nodule had not changed, so the hospital immediately operated on him to take the pathology, and it was found that it was indeed lung cancer, which belonged to peripheral microinvasive adenocarcinoma.

Fortunately, due to early detection and timely surgery, Kobayashi has recovered relatively well and has been discharged from the hospital.

According to statistics, from 2005 to 2020, the number of cancer-related deaths in China increased by 21.6%, and lung cancer, liver cancer and stomach cancer are still the top three causes of death.

"This is not the first case of lung cancer in children that I have taken over, as most children do not have regular check-ups like adults. Chen Jinping introduced that lung cancer has certain family history characteristics, and if there are lung cancer patients in the family, the probability of other family members getting lung cancer will also increase. For such families, more attention should be paid to physical examinations.

Chen Jinping reminded that the survival rate of lung cancer has a lot to do with the stage at the time of detection. However, many early-stage lung cancers have no obvious symptoms, so it is difficult to detect them early. Timely screening is key to detecting lung cancer.

In general, 80% to 90% of lung nodules detected on initial CT examination are benign lesions. However, if there are 2 types of lung nodules on the body, it is necessary to pay enough attention to it, follow up regularly, and remove it surgically if necessary.

● Pulmonary nodules with unclear boundaries of more than 8 mm

Depending on the size and morphology of the nodule, if the size of the nodule is more than 8 mm, the nodule boundary is unclear, lobulated, the edge is burr, and there are vacuoles and blood vessels in the nodule, it needs to be rechecked regularly.

If the nodule is enlarged or has an increased solid component during the follow-up, it is best to help identify or surgically remove the nodule through relevant diagnosis and treatment, and such nodules may become lung cancer over time.

● Lung nodules that gradually increase in size over time

The nodule is small but tends to increase over time, and it is necessary to be alert to the risk of cancer and require surgical resection if necessary.
