The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM features an optical structure of 17 elements in 11 groups, and is equipped with three UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements to achieve high image quality from the center of the frame to the edges. The zoom lens is divided into 6 groups, which keeps the image quality fluctuating during zoom, and achieves stable image quality output within this focal range.
The lens is equipped with a 9-blade circular diaphragm, which can achieve a minimum focusing distance of 0 .8m and a magnification of 0.25x at the 200mm end. The lens is equipped with an IS optical image stabilization mechanism, which can achieve a shake compensation effect of about 5.5 stops. The NANO USM ultrasonic motor provides a strong focus drive for this telephoto lens, so the focusing speed is very fast.
An introduction to the appearance of the lens
The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens is painted in white, which is also part of the tradition of Canon's telephoto lenses. The lens body is made of a new white paint that has a high reflectivity to mid-infrared rays in sunlight, which effectively suppresses the rise in lens temperature. In addition, the lens also adopts a double-layer structure of the outer layer of the lens barrel and the lens support layer, which controls the heat conduction path by optimizing the lens support position, so as to prevent the heat from the outer layer from being directly transferred to the inside of the lens. The temperature of the lens barrel is not easy to rise when shooting under the scorching sun, which has a good shooting experience.

From top to bottom, the lens is a white lens barrel, a zoom ring, a zoom damping adjustment ring, two Fn buttons, a function lever area (AF/MF switching, anti-shake switch), a focus ring/multi-function control ring, and a tripod ring.
The lens is designed with an external zoom
Zoom rings and zoom damping adjustment rings
The RF200-800mmF6.3-9 IS USM lens features an external zoom design with a wide zoom ring made of rubber for easy zoom operation. The zoom damping adjustment ring located below the zoom ring can change the damping size when operating the zoom ring according to the user's actual needs. The 2 Fn buttons can be assigned different functions according to personal Xi to improve shooting efficiency and ease of operation.
Focus ring/multi-function control ring
The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens integrates a focus ring and a multi-function control ring, which can be switched through a function lever on the side of the lens. One of the features of Canon's RF lenses is the multi-function control ring, which allows users to customize functions such as sensitivity adjustment and shutter speed, making it easier for users to use it and improve shooting convenience.
Tripod rings and tripod rests
The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens is equipped with a tripod ring and a tripod rest, the tripod ring is non-detachable but can be adjusted. There are 2 strap holes on the tripod ring, which makes it easy for users to wear the strap directly to the lens when shooting out and about.
Close-up of the front lens group
As a super telephoto lens, the Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens has a filter diameter of 95mm and a fluorine coating on the front lens that is less susceptible to dust and oil. The 12 metal contacts on the lens mount allow for faster and more efficient data transfer to the camera.

The RF200-800mmF6.3-9 IS USM is not an L-class lens, but it is highly reliable for field shooting. The movable parts such as the lens operating ring and switch are made of a waterproof and dustproof structure.
The resolution of each focal length of the lens is tested
For the resolution test, I used the Canon full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R5 with 45 million effective pixels for the 200mm, 400mm, 600mm, and 800mm ends. The aperture priority mode was used during the test, the sensitivity was set to ISO 100, and the aperture was recorded in RAW+JPEG format, and the aperture was changed step by step. Finally, zoom in 100% and take a screenshot of the center and edge of the frame for comparison.
At 200mm, the resolution of this lens is very good, and detail in the center and edges of the frame is excellent with the aperture wide open. Resolution is best at f/8 and f/11, and from f/16 onwards the resolution decreases, but even at f/22 at a small aperture the image is very detailed.
The lens is surprisingly impressive at 400mm and 600mm resolution, with a high level of detail in the center and edges, from the maximum aperture all the way up to f/16. The resolution drop is noticeable at the F32 minimum aperture, but considering that it is 100% magnified, this kind of resolution performance is perfectly fine in actual shooting.
The maximum aperture at 800mm starts at F9, and as we can see from the image above, the resolution is good in the center of the frame from F9 to F22, while the edges only appear loose from F22.

The photo above is a pigeon I took with the EOS R5 with this lens, and I can see that the pigeon's eyes and feathers are very detailed and the overall image sharpness is very high.
Lens ghosting, flare, dispersion test
The optical structure of the Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens is 17 elements in 11 groups, including three UD (ultra-low dispersion) elements, and achieves excellent chromatic aberration correction and high image quality with low bleeding from the center of the frame to the periphery. In addition, the zoom lenses are dispersed into six groups, which suppresses fluctuations in image quality during zooming, and achieves stable image quality over the entire focal length range.

800mm ghost flare real shot
In our tests, we used the 200mm and 800mm lenses to shoot the sun directly, and in terms of actual shooting results, there was only a slight flare on the 200mm end and excellent anti-glare performance on the 800mm end. In fact, in actual shooting, we don't shoot directly in the sun, and this test is only to test the optical performance of the lens under extreme conditions. In practice, the Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens performs very well in this regard.
In terms of chromatic aperture, the lens shows excellent control, with no dispersion visible at wide aperture at 200mm and 800mm. This has to do with its excellent optical structure, and of course it has to do with the fact that the aperture of this super telephoto lens is not very large.

Lens vignetting and distortion testing
The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM Lens performs very well at both 200mm and 800mm with very slight vignetting at wide aperture. In the distortion test, the lens only showed very slight pincushion distortion at the 200mm end, while no distortion was visible at the 800mm end.

Lens focus and stabilization tests
The Canon RF200-800mm F6.3-9 IS USM lens is equipped with a nano USM ultrasonic motor, which provides a high-speed, precise focusing experience while being quieter and contributing to the miniaturization of the lens.
As you can see from the screen recording video above, the lens is fast and accurate when focusing, and it doesn't drag on the mud. Combined with Canon EOS R5's second-generation dual-pixel CMOS AF technology, you can quickly lock on to your subject. In ecology, sports and other photography subjects, users can capture more exciting moments.
The RF200-800mmF6.3-9 IS USM lens has a built-in optical hand shake compensation mechanism. The gyroscope sensor of the lens can detect shake and compensate for the shake at 5.5 stops of shutter speed. When paired with the EOS R5 with in-body image stabilization, the camera and lens can achieve coordinated image stabilization, with 5.5 levels of stabilization at the 800mm end.
