Recently, there have been incidents of collective food poisoning suspected of being caused by eating oysters in many places in France. Affected by this, France has issued a ban on the fishing and sale of oysters in several oyster producing areas in recent days.
It is currently the peak season for the sale of oysters and other shellfish in France, as it is a must-have dish on the table of many French people during the year-end holidays. However, many places in France have recently issued bans on the fishing and sale of oysters, due to a number of cases of collective food poisoning suspected to be caused by the consumption of oysters.
On the 30th, the northern French coastal province of Manche announced a temporary ban on the fishing and sale of shellfish for human consumption in the Saint-Vaste-Laougue region of the province, because norovirus, which causes severe acute gastroenteritis, has been found in oysters in the area. Previously, for the same reason, the province of Calvados in the Normandy region and the Bay of Arcachon in the Gironde department, which is the largest producer of oysters in France, have temporarily suspended the sale of locally farmed oysters on the 29th and 28th, respectively.
On the 30th, at a seafood market in Nojean-sur-Marne, a suburb of Paris, oyster sellers said their business had been affected by the ban.
Nogent-sur-Marne seafood vendors, France: This will definitely affect us, although only the Gulf of Arcachon and parts of Normandy are banned, but consumers will think that all oysters are problematic and the total sales will definitely decline.
Some consumers also said they were more cautious and avoided eating oysters during the festive season at the end of the year.
Resident, Nojean-sur-Marne, France: We don't buy oysters anymore because there's obviously a problem. We already have people in our family who got sick from eating oysters at Christmas, and they got gastroenteritis, so we thought it would be best to avoid it.
