A few days ago, the Fisheries Development Strategy Research Center of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences released the "Measurement and Analysis Report on the Edible Consumption of Aquatic Products by Chinese Residents (2023)".

The report provides an in-depth analysis of China's consumption of aquatic products. For the first time, the report comprehensively and systematically measures the consumption of aquatic products for consumption by Chinese residents between 2013 and 2022, using the method of subtracting non-consumption consumption from total domestic supply, and distinguishing between algae-containing and algae-free cases.

2. Comparison of edible consumption of animal and algae aquatic products

The total edible consumption of animal aquatic products: 32.7 million tons in 2013 and 48.37 million tons in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of 4.45%.

Per capita consumption of animal aquatic products: 23.92kg in 2013 and 34.27kg in 2022, an increase of 43%.

Total edible consumption of algae aquatic products: 6.05 million tons in 2013 and 7.74 million tons in 2022.

Algae consumption per capita: 24% increase in 2013 compared to 2013.

3. Comparison of consumption inside and outside the household

Household consumption fresh weight: 13.48kg in 2013 and 17.89kg in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of 3.19%.

Fresh weight for consumption outside the household: 14.86kg in 2013 and 21.86kg in 2022, with an average annual growth rate of 4.39%.

The proportion of consumption outside the household: 41.8%-47.9% between 2013 and 2022, and about 45% in 2022.

4. Comparison of residents' consumption of aquatic products with the recommended intake

Recommended intake under a balanced diet: 26.79-50.23 kg (fresh weight) per year, median 38.51 kg.

The per capita consumption of aquatic products of urban residents in 2022 is 39.93kg.

The per capita consumption of aquatic products of rural residents in 2022 is 26.38kg.

5. Consumption differences between regions

The six provinces had the largest total consumption: Guangdong, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Shandong, Fujian, and Hubei, with a total of 25.7742 million tons, accounting for 53.28%.

The six provinces had the smallest total consumption: Tibet, Qinghai, Ningxia, Gansu, Xinjiang and Shanxi, with a total of 724,800 tons, accounting for 1.50%.

In 2022, the per capita household consumption of aquatic products was 13.9kg.
