Mexican authorities said on Wednesday that they were killed in a shooting at a shopping center in the Caribbean coastal resort of Cancun.
The prosecutor in the state of Quintanaro did not disclose the name of the man. They said the shooting took place at a gym inside the mall.
They said the man had been convicted in Canada for gang-related crimes, including possession of illegal funds.
Global Affairs Canada has not immediately responded to a request for comment.
This is not the first time that Canadians have been killed in the region.
In January 2022, two Canadians, one of whom was wanted by Interpol, were killed in the nearby resort of Playa del Carmen, apparently because of debts between international drug and arms trafficking rings.
At that time, the bodies of two Canadians, a man and a woman, were found in a hotel in a Mexican resort, dead from stab wounds, and a source confirmed to CTV News that they were from Quebec.

The Quintanaro State Prosecutor's Office indicated that two people were found dead in a hotel apartment in Playa del Carmen.
Prosecutors also confirmed that the male victim had been wanted by Interpol on fraud charges. A third person was also reportedly injured.
