In January 1987, Hu Yaobang resigned as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee, and in November of the same year, he was elected as a member of the Politburo of the CPC Central Committee.
After he left his post, he still chose to take his illness to visit various places, which was Hu Yaobang's last 27 months.

Because he often sat at his desk and bowed his head to work, forgot to eat and sleep, and suffered from serious cervical spondylosis, from the winter of 1987 to the spring of 1988, Hu Yaobang had been treated in the hospital, and the central government considered his body and decided to let him recuperate for a month, but he still could not let go of the rivers and mountains of the motherland and applied to the central government to go out for an inspection.
In May of that year, Hu Yaobang and his party came to Yi County, Hebei Province. At that time, his body was already very uncomfortable, but the worries and concerns about the people in his heart overcame the pain caused by the flesh. He insisted on-site visits and held talks on the work of the local government on economic development and other aspects.
He listened to the detailed reports of the local cadres, and what he thought about was how to better implement and improve these tasks so that local residents could enjoy the practical benefits.
After that, Hu Yaobang visited forest farms, libraries, reservoirs and other places, and every time he went to a place, he would ask the comrades accompanying him in detail, understand the basic situation, patiently answer the difficult questions raised by the comrades, and express his own views and opinions. For Hu Yaobang, the people's livelihood is no small matter, and everything makes him worry about his stomach.
Only by doing a good job in these small things in people's livelihood can we better promote the construction of infrastructure and ensure that the people live and work in peace and contentment.
Later, in The Village of Malantai, Hu Yaobang asked the village party secretary about the difficulties and opinions of the villagers in their lives and production. For him, public opinion is very important, and only by listening to public opinion can we effectively solve problems and better guide villagers to embark on a road to prosperity.
Comrade Hu Yaobang also watched the whitebark pine seeds he personally collected a few years ago, and now the growth of trees is gratifying, and the forestry bureau chief plans to increase the planting area, transplant to several other tourist areas, and increase the green area, which Comrade Hu Yaobang believes is a very good method.
During his visit to Yi County, Comrade Hu Yaobang was deeply impressed by the local people who were simple, considerate of the people, and down-to-earth, and showed the communists' style of proceeding from reality in everything and serving the people.
The implementation of the policy of reform and opening up has not been smooth sailing, and Hu Yaobang is very concerned about this. And for several cities with good policies, he has to see for himself. Therefore, Hu Yaobang went to Zhuozhou, a city in Hebei Province where the reform and opening up policy was relatively well implemented.
He saw the local economic development with his own eyes and was very pleased. Driven by the stimulus of a good economy, people's lives are getting more and more promising, with good development prospects, broader employment opportunities, and more considerable benefits for enterprises. Taking a small look at the big picture, Hu Yaobang profoundly knew that the national economy was developing in a good and orderly direction.
The development and take-off of the economy are inseparable from the support and guidance of the state, which is enough to prove what Deng Xiaoping said: No matter whether the black cat is a white cat, the one who can catch the mouse is a good cat. Whether it is socialism or capitalism, the benefits of the market economy are intuitively visible, the economy is innocent, and the state can guide in an orderly manner enough to prove the superiority of the socialist country.
After leaving Zhuozhou, after a while, Comrade Hu Yaobang continued to visit and work, and he went to Changsha, Hunan. It was his birthday, but Hu Yaobang did not choose to be vocal, but simply ate a bowl of noodles. When the people around him knew that his birthday wanted to express something, Hu Yaobang resolutely disagreed, saying only: "This bowl of noodles is enough, and you should eat noodles on your birthday." ”
The accompanying staff could not help but feel moved and moved when they saw the situation, this leader who had struggled for the people for more than sixty years, was in a high position, on the day of his 73rd birthday, he only ate a bowl of noodles, when he was really frugal and honest, he led by example, never used his position to make a special, and always remembered that his duty was to serve the people.
When Comrade Hu Yaobang visited Changsha, he repeatedly inquired about the development of the local party among the entourage, and while watching and listening along the way, his thin shoulders fell with laughter, and the expression on his face was very kind.
However, because of the torment of the disease, some fatigue was still revealed, and when mentioning the Xiangxi region, he said worriedly: "Xiangxi is still very poor, the people have not become rich, and they have not solved the problem of food and clothing." The tone was full of apologies.
After visiting Changsha, Comrade Hu Yaobang went to Guangxi to recuperate, where the unique scenery of the landscape can alleviate the physical and mental pain of Comrade Hu Yaobang who has been tortured for a long time due to illness.
On the way to the meeting, he had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital, and on April 15, he died at the age of 73.

After Comrade Hu Yaobang's death, the reporter went to his home to conduct an interview, and when he saw the scene in the house, the reporter was shocked, and Comrade Hu Yaobang's bedroom was not large, very small. Not spacious at all, on his desk, there was only a desk calendar, a pair of reading glasses, a few pens, and the teacup was an empty bottle of coffee.
Comrade Hu Yaobang has done his utmost incorruptibility and simplicity and wholeheartedly serves the country and the people, just as he always hangs on his lips: "Communists must be honest." ”
Comrade Hu Yaobang joined the revolution when he was a teenager, his hometown was the Red Army activity zone, the whole family at that time resolutely participated in the revolution, influenced by his family, Comrade Hu Yaobang developed infinite enthusiasm and admiration for the revolution, during a winter vacation, Hu Yaobang secretly joined the youth league.
In 1930, the Red Army troops arrived in Liuyang, the city was under martial law, and Hu Yaobang was urgently picked up from the school by his family.
During the suspension of classes at home, Hu Yaobang and several other friends founded a "Lenin School of the Young Communist Party", and Hu Yaobang served as a local political teacher in the school, because his advanced thinking was strongly praised by the Liuyang Children's General Bureau.
In his political career, Comrade Hu Yaobang devoted his life to the party without reservation and pushed the cause of reform and opening up to the wave.
After serving as general secretary, he announced that he would run all over the country's counties, and he also proved with his own actions that more than 2,000 counties and more than 1,600 counties in China have left his footprints, working every day in a race against the clock, reading reports, approving documents, and always working until late at night.
After entering politics, he refused to seek welfare for his brother, and in the fields of his hometown, he could often see Hu Yaobang's brother and sister-in-law wearing cloth shoes and straw hats, bending down to cultivate in the field, one was a state leader and the other was a farmer, and people had to believe that Comrade Hu Yaobang had strict requirements for himself.
Comrade Hu Yaobang would always use his own salary to help his relatives from time to time, hoping to get the understanding of his brothers and relatives.
After assuming an important position, Hu Yaobang held a family meeting and solemnly told his family that no matter who used my signboard to do something wrong, I would not intercede for him. Hu Yaobang's nephew found a relative of a party and county leader and hoped to arrange a post for himself, but when Comrade Hu Yaobang learned of this matter, he was furious and demanded that the leader immediately dismiss his nephew, otherwise he would handle things according to law.
No matter who it was, Hu Yaobang was very disgusted with engaging in privilege.

When the reform policy was obstructed and questioned, Comrade Hu Yaobang firmly stepped forward, used his body to block gossip, defended this correct development path, and presided over the formulation of the "Decision of the CPC Central Committee on the Reform of the Education System" and other cultural work has given the opportunity to flourish in education, science and technology, journalism and other cultural aspects.
The Third Plenary Session of the Eleventh Central Committee, the watershed of reform and opening up, encountered many obstacles when organizing the implementation and formulation of policies, and Comrade Hu Yaobang was not afraid of hardships or difficulties, and his firm will was unswerving, making indelible contributions to the economic development of the motherland.
A series of rural reform policies formulated have improved the living standards in China's rural areas, increased the economic income of the local people, and reformed the economic system with the theme of cities, which has made a qualitative leap in the type of production, increased the pace of opening up the coastal areas to the outside world, and promoted the opening of the country's doors to the outside world.
Comrade Hu Yaobang fully understood the arduousness of the reform task, devoted a great deal of painstaking efforts to promoting the development of the reform cause, conscientiously implemented Deng Xiaoping Theory, persisted in reform and opening up without wavering, always stood by the side of the party and the people, supported the party's work, actively carried out the modernization of reform, opening up, and with a long-term vision, pointed out that it is necessary to learn to use foreign resources to open up the international market.
The cause of construction in developed areas must not be left behind, the cause of economic construction in underdeveloped areas must not be forgotten, and the guidelines for the reform and experiment of special economic zones must be implemented in a down-to-earth manner, attach importance to the unity of the Communist Party and other people of democratic parties, and do a great deal of work for the United Front of the Communist Party, democratic parties, and non-party organizations.
Adhering to the foreign policy principle has played a positive role in promoting China's diplomatic cause and timely adjusting the diplomatic policy in accordance with changes in the international situation.
Comrade Hu Yaobang always stressed the issue of the party's honest work style, set strict demands on himself and his family, refused to use his position to seek the welfare of his relatives, safeguarded the party's reputation and image, and fought against the unhealthy and corrupt trends.
Comrade Hu Yaobang dedicated his life to the party and the people, and in his unremitting struggle for the cause of the party and the people, he lived a life worthy of the title of Communist Party member.
