They are white-clothed angels who save lives and help the wounded, and they are also friendly messengers who transmit friendship.
They traveled thousands of miles across mountains and seas to interpret the benevolence of doctors and practice the "responsibility of a great country".

I am Feng Haiping, a general surgeon from Bayannur City Hospital in the 23rd batch of Chinese medical teams assisting Rwanda. Today is my 170th day in Rwanda.

At the end of 2022, I came to Rwanda. Although the country's medical conditions are relatively backward, it has a stable society, a clean environment, simple folk customs, and a pleasant climate, which is worthy of being called "Little Switzerland of Africa".
On January 9 this year, I officially started my medical assistance work at Masaka Hospital, the resident hospital. As a general surgeon, my main job is to complete the operation and relieve the patient's pain.

Early in my work, I found that the spectrum of diseases here is very different from that in China, and the most common appendicitis, cholelithiasis, gastrointestinal perforation, etc. in China are extremely rare here, but umbilical hernia, white hernia, inguinal hernia and other hernias are the most common. Among them, men have the highest proportion of oblique inguinal hernias, and most of them come to the hospital with large hernias and complex hernias.
The main reason is that the patients here cannot be treated in time, which makes the course of the disease long, coupled with the local diet structure, the patient's protein intake is insufficient, the nutrition is poor, and most of them are engaged in heavy physical labor.

The larger the hernia, the more difficult the operation, the longer the operation, and the increased the incidence of postoperative complications and the risk of postoperative recurrence. Therefore, as a surgeon, I must do a good job of preoperative evaluation and preparation, high-quality surgery, and postoperative management.
Of course, I will encounter various difficulties in my work. For example, the vast majority of patients here only know Kinyarwanda, not English, so I have to constantly seek the help of local medical staff who act as interpreters for me.

In addition, Masaka Hospital has only two operating rooms, and there are many caesarean sections here, and the operating rooms and staff are limited, and we often have to "make way" for emergency caesarean sections, so we often have to do overtime surgery. Fortunately, there is the initiative of teammates to help. Here, too, I would like to thank them for their selfless dedication.
To work better, it is necessary to coordinate the coordination of surgery, emergency department, anesthesiology department, supply room, etc. Therefore, our team leader is constantly running around every day to coordinate between hospital leaders and departments. He has a lot of other jobs and tasks and is the most stressful person on our team, so I am very grateful to the captain for his dedication and support.

In our work, even if there are many difficulties, our whole team will work together to overcome all difficulties to ensure the smooth development of the work. Seeing the patient's knowing smile and affirmative gaze after surgery, we will feel that our efforts and efforts are worth it.
There are particularly many patients here, with surgeries now scheduled for two months and the number of patients growing. I also hope that Masaka Hospital will complete the renovation of the obstetric surgery room as soon as possible, so that we can treat more patients, which is also my greatest wish during my time in Rwanda.
