Mr. Mao Yisheng is the most respected old scholar and principal of Southwest Jiaotong University, a famous scientist, engineering educator, the founder of China's modern bridges, and a model of patriotic intellectuals.
In 1937, he presided over the construction of the qiantang River Bridge, the first modern steel bridge designed and constructed by Chinese himself, which is an immortal monument in the history of Chinese bridge engineering. In the 1950s, he made important contributions to the construction of the Wuhan Yangtze River Bridge. He presided over the work of the Institute of Railway Science for more than 30 years, and provided a large number of scientific research achievements for the production and construction of railway transportation in China. The "History of Ancient Bridge Technology in China" edited by him is the first history of ancient bridges in China.

Mr. Mao Yisheng was serious and prudent in his choice of faith, looking back on the past, Mr. Mao Yisheng was born in the late Qing Dynasty, grew up in the early years of the Republic of China, almost walked with the 20th century, he experienced the first half of the 20th century in the land of China, and deeply realized the greatness of the Communist Party of China. Therefore, the 66-year-old Mao Yisheng solemnly applied to Premier Zhou Enlai to join the party, but this application was not approved.
Premier Zhou earnestly replied to Mr. Mao Yisheng: "You can play a better role if you stay outside the party. "Staying outside the party is good for the country and the people, and Mr. Mao Yisheng did as he said in his oath." Since then, Mr. Mao has been committed to helping overseas intellectuals return to China and build a new China that is in ruins.

In 1985, Mr. Mao Yisheng's eyes were almost blind due to lesions, and he felt that he could not wait any longer, and after careful consideration, he formally wrote an application for joining the party: "I am more than ninety years old, and I can work for the party for a short day, and the ardent hope of joining the party is increasing day by day." To this end, I would like to apply again, and I am willing to fight for the cause of communism all my life! This time, the long-cherished wish of mr. Mao Yisheng, who is 91 years old, has finally come true. At the joining ceremony, he said with emotion: "Joining the Communist Party of China is my wish for many years, and this wish is a summary of my life's experience. Today is the most glorious and unforgettable day of my life! ”

In 1991, Southwest Jiaotong University made a statue of Mao Yisheng in the Jiuli Campus, and Lu Dingyi wrote an inscription by Vice Premier: "Model of Patriotic Intellectuals - Comrade Mao Yisheng"; in 2006, the statue was made at the Emei Campus; in 2016, the Jiuli Campus Library was named "Mao Yisheng Library".
