Filmed to commemorate the 50th anniversary of China's victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, the film focuses on the last eight days of General Yang Jingyu's life and tells the heroic deeds of his heroic deeds in leading the Northeast Anti-Japanese Coalition Army to fight bravely against the Japanese army.

Although the film freezes the perspective on the last eight days of Yang Jingyu's life, the crew filmed it for more than two months in the dense forest of Changbai Mountain. For more than two months, the director will ask Wang Gang the same question almost every day: "How do you understand Yang Jingyu's mood at this moment?" ”
This is also the question he keeps asking himself, and the daily shooting, for Wang Gang, seems to be the test of life. In his view, "the pressure on Yang Jingyu's soul is not revealed like some people", and how to express this is particularly important. "General Miki, if someone invades Japanese territory and massacres the people, will you accept their official positions and become brothers with him?" This conversation between Yang Jingyu and the Japanese officer before his death was deliberated over and over again.

In fact, what happened to General Yang Jingyu is far from being able to show in the movie.
In 1932, Yang Jingyu was entrusted by the Party Central Committee to organize the Anti-Japanese Coalition Army in the northeast, and since then he has successively served as the commander-in-chief of the Anti-Japanese Coalition Army, leading the northeast military and civilians to fight a bloody battle between the White Mountains and the Black Water.

In October 1939, the Japanese Kwantung Army and the puppet Manchu authorities formulated a battle plan against the First Route Army of the Northeast Anti-Japanese Coalition Army led by Yang Jingyu.
In order to avoid being annihilated by the enemy, Yang Jingyu constantly reduced the troops to pieces and divided them into shifts. In 1940, in the lunar new year, after Yang Jingyu broke through again in Dongshuangyagou in Maojiang County, Jilin Province, there were only more than 60 fighters around him.

After that, Yang Jingyu led the troops to carry out many arduous battles, dragging down the Japanese "crusade" troops of more than 600 people.
However, due to the betrayal of the traitors, Yang Jingyu's troops fell into a situation of isolation and helplessness. After several days and nights of fighting with the Japanese, Yang Jingyu was killed on February 23, 1940.

The next day, the traitors took Yang Jingyu's head down, and the head of the pseudo-Tonghua Provincial Police Department, Kishitani Ryuichiro, used a command knife to cut open Yang Jingyu's abdomen to find out what Yang Jingyu had eaten, so that he could be so brave and good at fighting in such a difficult environment. According to the doctor's identification, Yang Jingyu's stomach did not have a single grain, only grass roots and cotton wool that had not yet been digested. Even Kishitani Ryuichiro had to admit: "Although he is an enemy, he also sighs at his magnificence, a great hero!" ”
However, until many years after Yang Jingyu's death, no one knew his real name.
During the Liberation War, Yang Yichen, then deputy director of the Administrative Work Committee of the Yuwan-Anhui-Suzhou Border Region, saw an article promoting Yang Jingyu saying that Yang Jingyu was from Anhui, which aroused his suspicions.
In 1932, he worked briefly with Yang Jingyu in the Manchurian Provincial Committee of Harbin, and he remembered that Yang Jingyu was called "Dama" in the party, and said that his hometown was henan, and there was a daughter-in-law and children at home.
Later, at a meeting, Yang Yichen met Xu Zirong, a classmate of Yang Jingyu's students in Kaifeng and one of the leaders of the Queshan peasant revolt. Xu Zirong told him that "Da Ma" was his compatriot, a native of Liwan, Qishan, Henan.
Yang Yichen sent a letter to the County Party Committee asking for assistance. At the turn of the spring and summer of 1951, the staff of the Qishan County Party Committee found Ma Congyun, a descendant of "Dama", and collected from them a photo of Ma Shangde when he was studying at the Kaifeng First Industrial School.

It turned out that Yang Jingyu was born in 1905 to a peasant family in Qishan County, Henan Province, whose real name was Ma Shangde. In 1922, Yang Jingyu married Guo Lian, a girl from the nearby village of Yangqiao, and soon after the marriage, he went out to school, and even joined the Communist Party of China in 1927, leading the armed rebellion of the peasants in Qishan and the Autumn Harvest Rebellion in Liudian, and served as the commander-in-chief of the county peasant revolutionary army.
Yang Jingyu was busy for the revolution, born into death, and his family was also deeply persecuted, Guo Lian took her mother-in-law and children to hide around, asking for food for a living.
On the evening of March 27, 1928, Yang Jingyu suddenly came to the small shack where his family lived, hugged his daughter who was only five days old, and said to his wife: "Tomorrow I will go out of the house, maybe I will not come back for a few years, and this family will be handed over to you!" Guo Lian did not expect that it would become the last time she and her husband would meet.
In 1944, Guo Lian died of a serious illness due to torture by the Japanese army. Before she died, she handed over the only photograph of her husband to her children and instructed them: "Hide your father's picture well, and in the future, when the Red Army returns, take this picture to your father."
