Qin Jiwei was a general of the people's army who was both wise, courageous, and meritorious. He joined the Jute Uprising in 1927 and the Red Army in 1929, experiencing the Long March. During the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he served as the commander of the First Division of the Taihang Military Region. During the Liberation War, he was the commander of the Ninth Column of the Jinji-Hebei Luyu Field Army. On the battlefield of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, he became famous because of the Battle of Shangganling. After that, he successively served as deputy commander and commander of the Kunming Military Region, commander of the Chengdu Military Region, and commander of the Beijing Military Region. In 1955, Qin Jiwei was awarded the rank of lieutenant general. In 1988, at the age of 74, Qin Jiwei became state councilor and minister of national defense, and was awarded the rank of general.

"I can't believe that stuff, I have to listen to you in person"

In the autumn of 1933, Qin Jiwei had been promoted to the head of the Guard Regiment of the Headquarters of the Red Fourth Front. He later recalled that at that time, the guard regiment was the head of the headquarters of the personal unit, as the regimental commander, he often went out with a cavalry squad, each with two guns, one long and one short, a large knife inserted in the back, a short gun hanging red spikes, a large knife hanging red streamers, beautiful and dazzling, running up to the wind, the spirit and mighty.

With the improvement of the Red Army's material supply, the headquarters of the Red Fourth Front equipped each regiment to which it belonged. Qin Jiwei first saw the phone, and somehow the monster was helpless when the bell rang. The soldiers on the side said busily: "Commander, this is the phone." Minister Zheng is inside and wants to talk to you. ”

Qin Jiwei glanced at the soldier and put the microphone to his ear, and the voice of Zheng Yizhai, then general manager of the Red Fourth Front, was really heard. Because Qin Jiwei was suspicious, Zheng Yizhai's voice was clearly heard, but the content of the words was not understood.

As usual, Zheng Yizhai asked after completing the task: "Do you understand?" Qin Jiwei, as usual, with his chest up, replied, "Got it." ”

Putting down the phone, Qin Jiwei did not know what task he was going to perform, so he had to rush 15 kilometers to the general manager's department to ask for instructions. When Zheng Yizhai saw Qin Jiwei, he was shocked and asked, "You didn't set off on a mission, why did you come again?" ”

Making a joke, Qin Jiwei began to reflect on himself: he had become the leader of the Red Army regiment, and he didn't even know the phone, which was a shame. It seems that it is not enough to just know that it is not enough to throw a hat and swing a large knife to fight for your life, and you must adapt to new duties and master new command techniques. He secretly resolved: to learn. If we do not strengthen our study, make jokes and make small mistakes, and miss the fighter plane, the matter will be big.

"Why are you still a commander?" Haven't made any progress in decades? ”

In October 1937, Qin Jiwei was ordered by the commander of the 129th Division of the Eighth Route Army to come to Taigu County, Shanxi Province, single-handedly, and pulled up an anti-Japanese armed force mainly composed of students, with about 200 people. Soon, Lai Jifa led the Yuci guerrillas to arrive, and his team was mainly workers from jinhua spinning mills, with more than 100 people. According to the orders of the 129th Division, the two guerrilla groups, together with the Yangquan Coal Miners' Guerrilla Brigade, were combined to form the eighth route army's first guerrilla armed force in the Taihang Mountains——— the "Qin Lai Detachment", with Qin Jiwei as commander and Lai Jifa as political commissar, with 3 brigades under its jurisdiction, with a total of more than 500 people.

This coincided with a period of great development of the anti-Japanese armed forces behind enemy lines. The "Qin Lai detachment" let go of mobilizing the masses, organizing the masses, arming the masses, and rapidly expanding the anti-Japanese armed forces, and in less than two years, the strength of the army grew to more than 5,000 people, more than ten times. The geographical scope under its jurisdiction is also very impressive, including More than 10 counties such as Liaoxian, Heshun, Pingding, Shouyang, Yuci, Taigu, Qixian, Yushe, and Xugou, and the county chiefs and county party secretaries of these counties are appointed by the "Qinlai Detachment."

The "Qin Lai Detachment" carried out guerrilla warfare against the enemy, especially the hoeing of traitors from the strongholds, and did the most vigorous work. At that time, under Qin Jiwei's order, 10 counties acted together to eliminate a hundred traitors overnight, so at that time, the traitors were too frightened to move.

In addition to persisting in armed struggle, the "Qin Lai Detachment" also organized production and raised funds to collect taxes. The house where Lai Jifa lived was full of large and small boxes, filled with taxes, which were handed over to the 129th Division, so that the revolutionary forces could continue to grow.

At that time, the "Qin Lai Detachment" Wei Zhen Taixing, to this day in the Jinzhong region, there are still many stories of the Qin commander of the Eighth Route Army.

Decades later, Qin Jiwei, then commander of the Beijing Military Region, made a special trip to his hometown in the Taihang Mountains. His old landlord listened to others shouting Commander Qin, felt very incomprehensible, and took Qin Jiwei's hand and asked, "Why are you still a commander?" When he became a commander, he defeated the Japanese devils and beat Chiang Kai-shek away, and he did not make progress for decades? ”

After the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, the domestic situation was once confusing. On January 10, 1946, the Kuomintang and the Communists formally reached an armistice. In order to implement the armistice order, representatives of the Kuomintang, the Communist Party and the US military set up the Military Investigation Office Executive Department (hereinafter referred to as the "Military Investigation Department") in Peiping, under which a number of enforcement teams were set up. Qin Jiwei, then commander of the Taihang Military Region, was appointed chief representative of the Communist Party of China in the Twelfth Group, with the rank of major general. During the negotiations, the Military Investigation Department summoned the heads of local groups to Beiping for a meeting to report on the situation. So Qin Jiwei came to Beiping, but he didn't expect to make a big joke.

One day in his free time, Qin Jiwei and Huang Zhen, the chief representative of the Communist Party of China in the Tenth Group, went out shopping together, both of whom were in their early 30s, wearing brand-new military uniforms.

The two of them arrived at the front door in a moment and met a seller of roasted potatoes. Huang Zhen, a native of Anhui and likes to eat sweets, said, "Old Qin, buy two roasted potatoes." ”

Qin Jiwei considered that the two major generals had lost their identities in eating on the street, so he said: "Go to the front and find a restaurant, and then eat a good meal." ”

They walked into a restaurant opened by Shandong people, and the waitress greeted them, smiling and greeting warmly: "What do the two chiefs eat?"

Qin Jiwei is a hubei native, and of course speaks in hubei dialect: "Is there any hóngxǔ (sweet potato)?" ”

The waitress didn't understand and asked, "What?" ”

Qin Jiwei said again: "hóngxǔ." ”

The waitress still didn't understand. Sweet potatoes, that is, sweet potatoes, have different names in different places: Beiping people call them "white potatoes", Shandong people call them "sweet potatoes", and Hubei people call them "sweet potatoes" or "red amaranth".

This incident left an extremely deep impression on Qin Jiwei. Later, when the troops popularized Mandarin, he told this story to the cadres of the organs, and the effect was excellent.

"How can such a large commander oppose the cattle and become a system?"

During the Liberation War, Qin Jiwei fought under the direct command of Liu Bocheng, benefited a lot, and was criticized by Liu Bocheng, but he was convinced and unforgettable.

One day, a bridge was to be crossed during the march. The mule that Qin Jiwei was riding was usually majestic, but that day, for some reason, he did not dare to go on the bridge. He was so angry that he asked the groom to lead him in the front, and he pulled out his pistol in the back, "Boom!" Shoot a shot in the air. The mule was startled and quickly took a step forward.

Qin Jiwei thought it was funny, "Boom!" Another shot was fired, and the mule jumped forward again.

At that time, although Qin Jiwei was already a commander who led nearly 10,000 people, after all, he was just in his early 30s, and sometimes he wanted to make some pranks. So he shot one shot at the sky, and the mule jumped forward step by step, all the way to the other side of the river.

Unexpectedly, this matter reached Liu Bocheng's ears on the same day. Liu Bocheng summoned Qin Jiwei and criticized him very seriously: "You, Qin Jiwei, when will you change your guerrilla habits?"
