The hot musical "Waitress", starring Sarah Barryes, began on September 2 at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre.
Barreilles was nominated for a Tony award for the 2007 film score for The Waitress. The following year, she was invited to play the main character Jenna, replacing the original Jesse Mueller.
In April 2016, after the world premiere at the American Repertory Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts, "The Waitress" opened on Broadway. The Broadway musical made history as the first musical to be entirely female-led (starring Barryes, director Diane Paulus, screenwriter Jesse Nelson and choreographer Lorraine Lataro are all women).
Based on the 2007 film of the same name, Waitress tells the story of Jenna, a waitress and pie-making expert who is trapped in a small town and her life is in crisis. When a baking competition in a nearby county offered her the chance to get out of here, Jenna began weighing the promises she had made with the freedoms she was about to come.
