The lost city of Alexandria, Egypt's 🇪🇬 heraklion, is an ancient city that is a landscape deep in the Mediterranean ocean. Some rare inscriptions and ancient carvings, hidden for thousands of years, are submerged in the depths of the sea.

French archaeologist Franck Goddio and his team, after years of studying the massive expansion of the Gulf of Aboukir off the coast of Egypt, saw a huge face emerge from the shadows in the water. Goddio finally met Thanis Heraklion, completely submerged 6.5 kilometers off the coast of Alexandria. Found underwater are 64 ships, 700 anchors, a treasure trove of gold coins and 16-foot-tall statues, most notably the remains of a huge temple dedicated to the god Amun-West, and a small sarcophagus of animals. The ruins and handicrafts made of granite and diorite are remarkably well preserved, giving a glimpse into one of the largest port cities in the world 2,300 years ago. The port of Thonis Heraklion controlled all of Egypt's trade. The city was built around its great temples, a network of canals passed through Venice in ancient Egypt, and its islands were home to sanctuaries and small houses.
