Must the dragon be a symbol of evil in Western culture? First of all, the dragon in Western culture and the dragon in Chinese culture are not necessarily the same thing. Second, the dragon is not necessarily a symbol of evil in Western culture:
The Roman legions stationed in Britain had a tradition of holding the dragon flag, as shown in figure 1 below, and their dragon flag was a hollow strip of wind bags. Then in the eyes of the British, "dragon" became synonymous with "warrior", and the warlords called themselves "pendragon".
Gradually, some well-known British nobles and lords came up with legends related to dragons, such as the most typical King Arthur and Alfred the Great. Legend has it that when Alfred was born, a golden dragon hovered and chirped over the cathedral.
The family crest of Alfred the Great's family is the Golden Dragon of Wessex, a golden bipedal wyvern, as shown in Figure II below.
This golden dragon then evolved into the now-known four-legged dipterosaur, as shown in Figure III below.
The Holy Roman Emperor and King Sigismund of Hungary established the "Societas Draconistarum", an alliance established by European nobles against the Ottoman Turks, marked by a dragon with a cross on its back, as shown in Figure IV.
These European aristocrats who joined the "Dragon Knights" called themselves "followers of the ancient dragons, descendants of the ancient dragons". Vlad II was given the title of "Dragon" for his participation in this order, and Vlad III's title "Dracula" means "Son of the Dragon".
