That's refined carbohydrates and sugars.

Diets rich in refined carbohydrates and sugar are known to increase the risk of obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke and heart disease.

Refined carbohydrates are starchy foods such as white bread, pasta, pizza dough, pastries, and grains that contain mostly sugar.

They are made from processed grains such as corn, wheat and soybeans (a type of legume) in which nutrients have been removed.

Too many refined carbohydrates increase the amount of water in the blood, which in turn increases blood pressure.

A 2014 study published in OpenHeart showed that refined sugar, especially fructose, may pose a greater threat to blood pressure and heart disease (as opposed to salt).

The researchers found that people who consumed processed foods containing high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) for two consecutive weeks experienced elevated blood pressure.

Fructose or HFCS is a sweetener found in 80% to 90% of all processed foods, sodas, sweetened beverages, fruit juice drinks, and other packaged foods such as biscuits and salad dressings.

So how do added sugars cause high blood pressure episodes? It does this through multiple mechanisms.

First, fructose increases uric acid, thereby increasing blood pressure by blocking nitric oxide in the blood vessels. Nitric oxide relaxes blood vessels and helps them maintain elasticity.

When the body produces too much insulin and leptin in response to a high-carbohydrate diet, it increases blood pressure because it reduces the amount of water and sodium excreted by the kidneys.

As insulin levels increase, cells become resistant to insulin. This causes magnesium to be unable to be stored in the body. So it leaves the body through urination. When there is not enough magnesium, the blood vessels do not relax completely, which leads to an increase in blood pressure.

Fourth, the end products of advanced glycosylation (AGEs) are directly derived from contact with sugars. AGEs can lead to diabetes-related complications. They also trigger processes that cause blood vessels to harden and narrow. This can lead to atherosclerosis and further increase blood pressure.

To significantly lower blood pressure, eliminate wheat, soy, and corn, as well as sugar and processed foods.

Choose complex carbohydrates such as peas, legumes, whole grains (try to avoid wheat), and vegetables. Use the right amount of natural sweeteners such as raw honey, maple syrup, stevia, and molasses.
