On June 7, local time, the British Railway, Maritime and Transport Union (RMT) said that thousands of rail workers plan to hold a three-day nationwide strike later this month to resolve disputes with management over layoffs and wages and benefits. It is understood that the strike will be held on June 21, 23 and 25, involving 13 train operating companies. In addition, the coalition said that London Underground workers will also go on strike on June 21.

The strike, which involved more than 40,000 employees and 13 train operators on the rail network, left only one-fifth of the mainline rail services to run as usual, with a severe impact on Britons' summer travel.

According to British media reports, due to the soaring energy prices, many farmers in the United Kingdom who grow cucumbers and bell peppers cannot afford to pay for greenhouse heating and have to close the greenhouse.

Agencies expect the UK to face a shortage of cucumber and bell pepper supply this summer. Cucumbers and bell peppers are commonly used vegetables in the British to make salads. Due to the UK weather, they often need to be grown in a greenhouse environment. At the beginning of last year, cucumber and bell pepper growers spent on gas at 0.4 pounds (about 3.3 yuan) per sam (gas energy measurement unit, about 106 megajoules), and then the price soared to 8 pounds (66.5 yuan yuan) per sam. It is estimated that about half of the greenhouses in the UK that grow cucumbers and bell peppers are closed as a result, and this year's harvest is expected to fall by about half. In Britain, where growers mostly employ workers from Ukraine, the escalation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in February left growers facing a labour shortage. In addition to shortages of cucumbers and bell peppers, problems such as labor shortages and rising costs have also led to a 20% reduction in the production of mustard plants, including broccoli and cauliflower.

According to the UK Health Safety Agency, the UK has listed monkeypox as a statutory notifiable infectious disease since June 8. This means that all doctors in the UK must notify the local council or local health protection team if they suspect a patient has monkeypox. If monkeypox virus is found in laboratory samples, the UK Health Safety Agency must be notified.

The latest data show that as of June 7, local time, the total number of monkeypox cases in the UK reached 321.

Quantum Motion, a quantum computing startup led by scholars at Oxford University and University College London, has opened the UK's largest independent quantum computing laboratory in London to develop and build the world's most powerful quantum computer technology.

The lab will conduct experiments at temperatures 100 times lower than outer space, and the experimental equipment includes several specially configured dilution chillers capable of cooling quantum chips to nearly minus 273 degrees Celsius, the most important cryogenic device among British quantum companies to date.

The multi-million pound- and UK-backed, funded laboratory has a highly specialized team of scientists and engineers. The team will work together to make quantum computing a reality, solving problems that today's classical computers cannot solve.

On the 9th local time, British paleontologists said that the skeleton fossils of the largest known terrestrial dinosaur in Europe were found on the Isle of Wight in England. This dinosaur is one of the largest carnivorous dinosaur species on record.

British paleontologists have found parts of dinosaur bones from the Cretaceous period about 125 million years ago, including fossilized bones on the back, buttocks and tail, as well as some limb fragments, but no skulls or teeth. Based on the remains, paleontologists estimate that the dinosaur was at least more than 10 meters long.

Chris Barker, a phD student at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom who led the study, said the skeletal remains found should belong to a two-legged predatory spinosaurus dinosaur. They lived about 95 million years ago and are about 15 meters long, making them believed to be the longest known terrestrial dinosaurs.
