Located in the southeastern sea of the African continent, it is the fourth largest island in the world after Greenland, New Guinea (also known as Irian) and Kalimantan, across the Strait of Mozambique from the African continent, with a nearest distance of 386 kilometers and an area of 627,000 square kilometers. Madagascar is a mountainous land mass that slopes westward. The shape of the island is narrow and long, narrow from north to south, wide in the middle, with a maximum of 576 kilometers at its widest point and a total coastline of 3991 kilometers, making it the largest island on the Tropic of Cancer that crosses the Indian Ocean.

Madagascar's unique geographical location gives it an unusual abundance of species – about 200,000 species of flora and fauna, including fossas, small carnivores and about 35 species of lemurs, which are not found anywhere else on Earth. (Image from the Internet)
