Born in 1990, Zhang Junying is a nurse at Ruijin Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine. Under the epidemic situation, the northern branch of Ruijin Hospital in Jiading District was transformed into a designated hospital for the treatment of new coronavirus infection on March 17. As one of the first paramedics to enter, she has been working here for more than 40 days.
"Compared with the original wards, most of them were young people, and now they are basically the elderly, who have a variety of underlying diseases, poor physical resistance, weak communication skills, some of them are incapacitated and demented, and there are considerable degrees of impairment in eating." Zhang Junying said that "old children" sometimes have a more urgent personality, do not obey the management, and the needs are not easy to be identified, especially the meticulous and attentive observation, patient listening, and careful escort of nursing staff.
Zhang Junying said that when an old grandmother first came, she was a little scared and missed her granddaughter in particular, and in order to make her obediently take medicine and eat, nurses took turns playing her granddaughter. There is also a grandfather, stubborn, eager to eat, but also quite fond of dressing, so when everyone feeds him, they will always coax him to praise him, let him eat slower, more conducive to digestion.
As of May 4, ruijin hospital has treated a total of 4,067 patients in the northern branch, and the number of patients currently in the hospital is 814, of which 65% are over 60 years old, and 24% are over 80 years old.
"The treatment and care of COVID-19 aging is the key to winning this battle." Feng Qing, deputy director of the nursing department of Ruijin Hospital, said that the elderly are a vulnerable group of the new crown, and their condition after infection is relatively critical and rapidly changing, plus elderly patients and some skin pressure ulcers and other issues, all of which bring challenges to clinical care.

Feng Qing said that a 97-year-old patient was depressed after being admitted to the hospital, often crying his nose and not eating, in order to understand the old man's heart to better help him, the nurses tried to get close to him, listened to him tell the story of the past war years, and encouraged him to be as strong as in the past. After patient enlightenment, the old man's mood gradually calmed down, and his appetite improved, from wheelchair transportation to gradually walking on the ground. Two days ago, grandpa had recovered and been discharged from the hospital to reunite with his family.
Feng Qing said that at home, many "post-90s" may still be the treasures carefully cared for by their parents. But in their posts, they are meticulous "warriors", not afraid of suffering and tiredness, and strive to win this life defense war.
