Path of the Elves
Eagle Road
In October 2017, I came to Bergen for the second time, and the purpose of this trip was to take the self-driving route from Bergen to the Atlantic Road, which totaled 1600 kilometers and lasted 5 days.
The order of towns along the route is: Bergen - Sulvolen - Guélanger - Ezdar (by ferry) - Val Valley - Åndalsnes - Kristiansund - Sundarsela - Ernes Village (ferry) - Sulvoren - Bergen; the main attractions along the way are: World Heritage Sites "Urnes Stave Church" and "Geiranger fjord", "Eagle Road", "Elf Road", "Gudbrandsjuvet Gorge", "Atlantic Coastal Road" Ferries pass through the "Loustra Fjord", "Lang fjord" and "Nudar fjord"; via the main roads E16, 55, 63, 64, 70 and other major roads, along the way through a total of 45 tunnels, the total length of the tunnel is 80 km, the longest tunnel is 25 km.

Enjoy the Norwegian autumn colors along the way, the most beautiful scenery on the road!
Immediately after picking up at Bergen Airport at noon on October 3, drive north along the E16 road, today's destination is Sulvolen, 250 kilometers of road to go through more than 10 tunnels, the longest tunnel 25 kilometers, it is really dizzying.
Sulvolen is a small town on the edge of the Rustrafjord, this season is already the low season of tourism in Norway, the weather is getting cold, many hotels are closed, and it is close to dark, it is difficult to find a wooden house hotel next to the Lustrafjord, where you can stop for the night.
Survorn, spending the night in a log cabin next to the Loustra Fjord
It was overcast and silent.
The next morning, enjoy the surrounding scenery nearby, there is no wind, the water surface on the fjord side is calm, and the mountains in the distance have been yellowed by half of the autumn leaves, although it is cloudy, it is still colorful.

I had planned to take the ferry to the opposite shore to see the "Urnes Stave Church", but the ferry departed too late, did not wait here, and went north along Route 55 directly to the Geiranger fjord.

Pass by lom stavkyrkje, an ancient stave church built in 1170.

Then, head northwest along Route 15 to Langvatnet, past which turns onto Route 63, Norway's famous scenic route, which leads to the northern town of Ondarsnes. It is also known as the "Golden Way" because it passes through famous attractions such as the Geiranger fjord, the Eagle Route, the Nudar fjord, the Val Valley, the Gudbrandsjuvet Gorge, and the Elf Road.
The eastern end of the village of Geiranger, overlooking the village and the fjord
Arrived at Geiranger at 4 p.m. Pass by the eastern end of the village of Geiranger, where you can overlook the village and the fjord.
On the right is the "Eagle Road" with nine turns and eighteen turns.
After a short stop in the village of Geiranger, you will circle up the "Eagle Road" at nine turns and eighteen turns, and stop at the "Geiranger fjord observation deck" to enjoy the magnificent scenery of the fjord. In the autumn, the fjord seems to be a little desolate. The last time I was here was 10 years ago in the summer, when the fjord was full of boats and boats.

Arrived in Ezdar after dark and spent the night in a holiday chalet.
The next morning, take a car ferry across the "Nudar Fjord" to the "Val Valley". The "Val Valley" is a valley in the fjord city of Möller-Rumsdale, Norway. It is located in the northern part of the Nudar Fjord. The Valdola River flows through the valley, and Norway's National Highway 63 runs through the valley along the river. Admire the autumn colors of the river valley along the way, and the turf houses along the Valdola River.

"Gudbrandsjuvet Gorge" is a sight and a stop in the Val Valley, the canyon is next to Route 63, where there is a spectacular valley crack, the rapids roar through the crack to the valley, along the crack there is a sightseeing boardwalk, the stone bridge on the crack - the Gudbrand Bridge was originally built in 1785, the current bridge was rebuilt in 1919.

Continue north along Route 63 and you'll find the famous "Elven Way.".
Path of the Elves
The Elven Road was built under the supervision of King Haakon VII of Norway, took eight years to complete, and opened to the public on July 31, 1936. The 11 bow-shaped curves and narrow pavements of the "Elven Road" make this dangerous road challenging. The observation deck at the top of the mountain, which is 850 meters above sea level, overlooks this beautiful mountain road, like a dragon hovering on the earth. The Sti Waterfall on the roadside cliff is spectacular.

The Stie Falls cascade down from a height of 320 meters, which is quite spectacular
Upon arrival at Ondarsnes, turn onto Route 64, take a car ferry through Langfjorden and continue along Route 64 straight to the Atlantic Coastal Road.
Take a car ferry through lang fjords
The "Atlantic Coastal Road", part of Norwegian Highway 64, is 8.27 km long and connects the municipalities of Ede and Avo, running through the inhabited islands and reef archipelagos between the two cities, with a width of 6.5 meters, 8 cross-sea bridges and 4 viewing stations.

Completed and opened to traffic on 7 July 1989, the road became one of the ninth largest tourist attractions in Norway; in 2005, it was named "Norwegian Architecture of the Century"; in 2006, it was evaluated by the British newspaper The Guardian as one of the "best sightseeing roads in the world".
More than 200,000 people visit here every year. If you can view it from the air, you can get a spectacular view of the Atlantic Coastal Road.
At the northern end of the "Atlantic Coastal Route" is the small town of Kristiansund, a clean and tidy coastal city steeped in history known for cod fishing and processing.
Kristiansund
Head southwest from Kristiansund to SundarSera via Highway 70, where you will find a homestay for the night.
The destination of the fourth day is the return journey to Sulvolen, 400 kilometers away, the main attraction is the World Heritage Site - "Urnes Stave Church".

There was a period of sunny day on the way today, I didn't see the sun for a few days, the autumn scenery with sunshine is much more beautiful, the autumn reflection at the water's edge under the sun is very charming, and the photos taken are beautiful!

I took a small road and drove to the "Urnes Stave Church", the road was very narrow, and it took a lot of trouble when I got the wrong car.
The "Urnes Stave Church" was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1979. It is said that there were more than 1,000 stave churches in Norway, but only more than 20 exist. Built in the 11th century, urnes stave church is the oldest of Norway's stave churches and the only one to be listed as a World Heritage Site.

The wooden church is situated on a stone foundation as a whole, which insulates itself from the corrosion of moisture from the ground. The church is surrounded by cemeteries. When we went, the church was not open, only to visit the exterior.

The wooden church is located in the village of Ernes on the Lustrafjorden of the Lustrafjord, across the fjord from Sulvoren, with several scheduled ferries running daily between the villages of Sulvoren and Ernes. It is said that this ferry route has been running for more than 150 years since it was opened in 1859. I caught the last ferry back to Sulvoorn and still spent the night in the cabin where I had stayed.

On the last day, return the car from Sulvoren back to Bergen Airport.
In the afternoon, visit Bergen again.
