The Director explains in detail | "Etiology of Epilepsy" – Heredity, Infection and Immunity

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological disorders in childhood, with an overall continental prevalence of 16/100,000 to 51/100,000 [1]. Childhood epilepsy has certain peculiarities compared to adults [2]:

1

Various seizure forms: some epileptic symptoms change with age, such as infantile spasms, most of which occur within 1 year of age, manifested by symptoms such as head flexion, bending, arms extension or elbow flexion, and some gradually change to other seizure forms with age, and the child's intelligence is mostly lower than normal;

2

Hidden symptoms: there are also many clinical manifestations of epilepsy in children that are less common than adults and are not easy to identify, such as tremors, jaw shaking, nodding, shoulder swinging, arm shaking during sleep, etc., these symptoms are often ignored and treatment is delayed;

3

Complex types: The manifestations and types of epilepsy in children are also more complex, such as childhood absence epilepsy, pediatric benign localized epilepsy, etc. only appear in early childhood and childhood, and most patients can remission, no longer recur or transition to other types of adult epilepsy in adulthood.

Childhood brain is in a stage of rapid development, cerebral cortex function development is not yet complete, blood-brain barrier function is weak, prone to sudden convulsions, muscle twitches and even cognitive impairment, long-term, frequent abnormal discharge attacks can lead to brain damage, this stage of brain damage to children's brain development, language and motor development may cause serious and irreversible effects [2]. In addition, primary epilepsy is more common in pediatric epilepsy, and the prognosis is better with early treatment of this type of epilepsy. Therefore, the early detection and accurate diagnosis and treatment of children's epilepsy are important issues that clinical scholars focus on and need to solve urgently.
