According to the statistics released by the National Health Commission, since the beginning of this year, a total of 27 deaths have been reported in China, and 116 existing severe cases. Shanghai has reported a total of 25 deaths for three consecutive days. Deaths are characterized by underlying disease and many unvaccinated cases.

Wang Huaqing, chief expert of the immunization program of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said at the press briefing that the trend and characteristics of severe cases and deaths caused by the Omikerong strain show that the proportion of severe illness and death is higher for the elderly who are not vaccinated and for those who have chronic underlying diseases.

Both have severe underlying medical conditions

According to the information released by the Shanghai Health Commission on April 21, there were 8 new local deaths on April 20, with an average age of 77.5 years and a maximum age of 93 years, all suffering from serious underlying diseases. On 19 April, non-elderly deaths appeared for the first time in the death information, with 7 new indigenous deaths, including 2 under the age of 60.

The reporter's inquiry found that the above two cases under the age of 60 also had serious underlying diseases, including advanced lung cancer, pleural effusion, and acute coronary syndrome.

According to the information of three deaths released by the Shanghai Health Commission on April 17, the death case was 1,89 years old, with acute coronary syndrome, coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension grade III, and cerebral infarction; the death case was 2,91 years old, with sequelae of cerebral infarction and hypertension, and the death case was 3,91 years old, with coronary heart disease and hypertension.

According to the information of 7 deaths released by the Shanghai Health Commission on April 18, all of them are over 60 years old, with serious underlying diseases such as coronary heart disease, diabetes, hypertension grade 3, post-cerebral infarction sequelae, cardiac function grade III., cerebral infarction, and hypoproteinemia. Of the seven deaths announced on 19 April, five were among the elderly over 70 years of age, with a combination of serious underlying diseases such as coronary heart disease.

Information released by Jilin Province in March also showed that the death case was 1,65 years old, with chronic renal failure - uremia, nephrotic syndrome, renal amyloidosis, coronary atherosclerotic heart disease and other underlying diseases; the death case was 2,87 years old, the patient had cerebral infarction, hypertension and other underlying diseases, waist trauma.

According to the ninth edition of the "Diagnosis and Treatment Plan for New Coronavirus Pneumonia", patients with chronic lung diseases, pleural effusions and other underlying diseases are at high risk of new crown pneumonia.

Tian Hongjun, chief physician of the Respiratory and Critical Care Department of Baogang Hospital in Inner Mongolia, who has experience in the treatment of severe patients with new coronary pneumonia for many times, told the Health Times reporter that many elderly people suffer from underlying diseases, such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (including hypertension), chronic lung diseases, diabetes, chronic liver, kidney disease, tumors, etc., which will lead to a decline in immunity, oxygen metabolism and cardiac blood flow perfusion disorders, turning into severe illness and even death.

Most have not been vaccinated against COVID-19

According to statistics released by the National Health Commission, at least 16 of the above 27 deaths have not been vaccinated against COVID-19. One of the 2 deaths reported in Jilin was not vaccinated, and at least 15 of the 25 deaths reported in Shanghai were not vaccinated.

Wang Huaqing, chief expert of the immunization program of the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, introduced at the press conference that the elderly are a very vulnerable group, one is the advanced age, and the other is that most of them have chronic underlying diseases, especially in the case of concentrated living in welfare institutions such as nursing homes. Taking data provided by the Hong Kong Department of Health as an example, of the more than 8,200 patients who died, 74% were not vaccinated and 14% had only been given a single injection.

Wang Huaqing suggested that the elderly who meet the conditions should be vaccinated as soon as possible, vaccinated as soon as possible, and strengthen vaccination as soon as possible when conditions need to be strengthened.

"The elderly, especially those with underlying diseases, should pay close attention to it, and it is recommended that eligible groups receive the new crown vaccine as soon as possible to improve the immunization effect." Tian Hongjun said.
