Text / Han Shaogong

I rarely took pictures before, and I always felt that taking pictures, keeping manuscripts, and keeping records of contacts was a bad problem of writers' narcissism and arrogance, nothing more than which guy was bent on entering literary history and museums, always ready to pinch his chin or look deeply into the posture - tired?

Therefore, I always avoid the camera again and again in a young age, with no intention of accumulating the kind of "visit here" photo of the dog peeing, even if there have been seagulls or Nikon cameras, mostly for others.

Unexpectedly, in the past one or two decades, electronic digital technology has greatly reduced the cost of photography, and national photography has become a common practice, and an "era of reading pictures" has quietly arrived. Although the prediction of the exit of words is too exaggerated, the colorful colors of the images reshape people's feelings about life, and their huge impact, appeal and influence are not small. Several times, I gave lessons to the students, and found that even if I told the whole hall of exclamations or laughter, they did not write down much, but some of the images of the PPT could penetrate their minds more, causing discussion and reminiscence again and again. A thin hand, the cold eyes of a former sage, a mottled old village wall, an early morning aerial photograph of a snowy forest... It seems to be better than a thousand words, conveying to them more concepts and logic that are unclear or even needless to be explained.

The ancients said, "He who has all the insides will be outside." "It's not just about the human body, it's about the world. A world is inherently a world of change. A true understanding of the world must be the vividness and richness of images in memory, and it is by no means limited to words—especially for practitioners, and for many people who believe in "seeing is believing" and "there is truth in pictures." The so-called inside must have outside, there must be quality and appearance, there must be righteousness and sound, and one of my long essays, "Hints" (2002), has concentrated on recording and sorting out my own feelings in this regard. It was also at that time, looking back at my many years of writing career, I believe that the attitude of the exclusive character is tantamount to semi-blindness, almost regretting that I have greatly failed the camera, and secretly thinking that if I can be one or two decades younger, I am afraid that I will start from scratch and go to a "picture reading" video worker.

Unfortunately, I can't carry so much camera equipment anymore, and many things can only be left to young people. Speaking of which, although I have taken very few pictures in my life, and although I have hastily left too many shadowless and invisible past days, I have personally experienced, witnessed, and participated in China's "great changes that have not occurred in three thousand years", with strong winds and rains, the world turned upside down, thrilling, and how fortunate. Unexpectedly, at the invitation of The Liaoning Fine Arts Publishing House, this time I was in a hurry to answer the call, and I had to temporarily find a few friends to help, so as to collect some old photos and reluctantly compile a copy -- although I myself do not know whether this is a little redundant for readers, and whether it is too late to make up for it after the fact.

Imagery from the past

I remember going to a friend's house in Lhasa many years ago and not seeing any old photos of his deceased relatives. The Tibetan friend said that according to their custom, destroying the old photos of the deceased and all the relics would benefit reincarnation and return them to a clean and strange world. So, according to this statement, isn't this album of mine still abandoning "reincarnation"? Not ready to reunite with this world in the next life?

Well, for the rest of my life, I don't really plan to come back later.

Miluo village

Yes, my relatives, my friends, all the worldly lives I care about, I have traveled to this world in the 20th and 21st centuries, accompanied you all these years, happiness is enough.

One-time life is actually supreme and priceless, and it is an unrepeatable miracle. And let us remember each other, even if we can't remember for too long, even if all the past events are in the snow, all in a sudden moment.
