Beauty or octopus? Picasso's abstract painting "Lying Naked" will be worth $60 million for the first auction

This has become an inevitable phenomenon: as long as Picasso's works appear at auction, the global art world will be excited.

Even if the latest appearance of "Lying Naked" will not appear until next month, that is, May 17, at Sotheby's Modern Art in New York, the major media have been eager to report it.

Picasso, The Woman Sitting by the Window

This extremely abstract body painting is a portrait of Picasso for his lover Marie Teresa Walter, the two met in 1927, from the 1930s onwards, Picasso's series of oil paintings have appeared in a series of oil paintings, and many of the paintings based on her have become Picasso's classics. The $103.4 million "Woman By the Window," made by Christie's in 2021, also depicts Mary Teresa Walter.

And the composition and picture of Lying, which will be auctioned this time, is also at the forefront of Picasso's abstract paintings, and the degree of strangeness and inconceivability is also among the most — for ordinary people, it is impossible to see that this image has any resemblance to the lying female body: in the painting, Picasso paints his lover with gray, lazy limbs, as if it were some kind of sea creature with a curved posture—for example, an octopus with a pair of large eyes. The large blue color in the background of the picture seems to imply that this charming and magical creature comes from the sea that gives birth to all things.

Picasso's Lying

"Picasso's series of portraits for his muse lover are undoubtedly the undeniable classics of 20th-century modern art," said Brooke Lampley, Sotheby's Chairman of Global Art Sales, who sold the painting: "This 'Lying Naked Woman' perfectly captures the female figure that fascinates the painter, composing a soulful love song by giving her a fin-like, incomparably soft body image. ”

The painting, which the collector acquired directly from Picasso's descendants in the early days, has never appeared on the auction floor before, and has therefore received extraordinary expectations, with an estimated value of $60 million — you know, last year's "Woman Sitting by the Window" was estimated at $55 million before the auction and actually sold for $103.4 million.
