Tesla: Self-driving taxis coming soon

Autonomous driving is an important technological factor to facilitate future transportation transformation.

If autonomous driving technology can be applied on a large scale, the driver's hands and feet can be completely liberated, and it can also improve travel efficiency, alleviate urban congestion, and reduce carbon emissions. However, at the current stage, the cost of autonomous driving is relatively high compared with the existing technology, and it is difficult to have economic feasibility.

Tesla's advanced driver assistance system is on sale for $12,000, and the beta version was launched in late 2020 to make cars better on city streets. By January, nearly 60,000 cars in the U.S. were equipped with this feature.

Tesla promises more features. But the software won't make its vehicle fully autonomous, and it will still require driver supervision.

Regarding autonomous driving, many models have been envisioned.

This year Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tesla would develop a "dedicated" self-driving robot taxi that "looks futuristic," but didn't specify a specific time, just about to launch.

He predicted in 2019 that by 2020, robo-taxis without human drivers will appear in various markets in the United States, but this has not been realized.

This year he said in January that he would be "shocked" if Tesla could not achieve full self-driving that is safer than humans this year.

Elon Musk originally mentioned Tesla's Robotaxi concept in part deux, a master plan originally published in 2016. At the time, Musk suggested that the company's Robotaxis leverage a regular Tesla with fully autonomous driving capabilities.

During Autonomy Day 2019, a large part of Musk's activities were introduced to Tesla's robotaxi concept. In 2019, Robotaxis is widely expected to be Tesla's consumer car, and they will deploy existing models such as the Model 3 to provide ride-sharing services.

However, Musk's comments during Tesla's Giga Texas Cyber Rodeo suggest that Tesla is now exploring a purpose-built vehicle for its Robotaxi service. Musk didn't use cars already on the market, such as the Model Y, instead hinted that Tesla was considering a newly designed car.

"Our factory has reserved a place reserved specifically for new models"

Musk said, "All I can say is that we're going to move towards true scale — a scale that no company in human history has ever reached." This is necessary to make the world transition to sustainable energy. Huge scale, fully autonomous, there will be a dedicated robot taxi, and it looks futuristic,"

Musk only mentioned the Tesla-specific Robotaxi in passing in his Cyber Rodeo talk, though he did mention that the car looks futuristic. The last time Musk teased a car with a futuristic design, Tesla came up with the Cyber truck. It will be interesting to see if Tesla will develop another vehicle with a radical design but cost-effective design for its Robotaxi fleet.

Despite Musk's comments that new models will be developed, Tesla owners may still be able to incorporate their vehicles into the Robotaxi fleet. After all, Tesla's fully autonomous driving kit is also designed for existing fleets.
