At the far southern tip of Gaza lies a small city called Rafah, which has gained fame for its war. The city, once a quiet border town with a sparsely populated population, has become a refuge for thousands of Palestinian refugees. They fled the fighting in the north and came here, causing the population of Rafah to explode to almost half of Gaza's population.
Israel's military strategy has chosen a path from north to south, and they see Rafah as the last stronghold of Hamas. According to Israeli intelligence, the remnants of Hamas, as well as some high-ranking militants, may be lurking in a corner of the city. The Israeli army has destroyed eighteen Hamas battalions, leaving only four battalions unfinished.
The international community has expressed strong concern over this Israeli action. They fear that the war could take huge casualties and make Rafah a living purgatory. Borrell, the European Union's foreign minister, once described the Gaza Strip as "the world's largest open-air prison" that could now be "the world's largest open-air cemetery".
Rafah's fate is now in Israel's hands. Every decision they make can have unforeseen consequences. In this war-torn land, Rafa's tomorrow is full of unknowns.
