On April 3, BYD Automobile officially announced that it will stop the production of fuel vehicles from March 2022 and focus only on EV pure electric and DM plug-in hybrid vehicles.
1. Why stop production?
Cede production capacity to new energy models
Although pure fuel vehicles still have a certain consumption base in the domestic market, BYD's new energy models can not be sold, or even sold too well. In mid-2021, BYD's new energy models shipped more than 600,000 units, an increase of 218.30% year-on-year, about one-fifth of the industry's sales last year!
This has resulted in new undelivered new car orders every month, which was once larger than the overall production capacity of BYD's factory, especially the hot-selling DM-i plug-in hybrid model, and it is really impossible to mention the car in a few months. Coupled with the recent succession of BYD's new cars, orders can only increase.
In contrast, BYD's pure fuel vehicles are declining, in January and February this year, BYD only sold 5,000 pure fuel vehicles, and in March, BYD's fuel vehicle production and sales data fell directly to 0! The era that belongs to BYD may really come. Therefore, BYD has long planned to give way to the production capacity of pure fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles with higher profits and better sales.
Occupy the global environmental policy highlands
As we all know, new energy models are a global development trend, and many multinational auto groups have announced the electrification strategy of their brands and the timetable for stopping the sale of fuel vehicles.
However, these auto giants are honest in their mouths, but their bodies are repeatedly jumping, because fuel vehicles are vested interests for them, and this cake is too comfortable and too comfortable to eat. In November last year, at the 26th General Conference of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Volvo, Ford, GM, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar and BYD all signed the Glasgow Declaration on Zero-Emission Vehicles and Vans, pledging to stop selling internal combustion engine vehicles in "major markets" around the world by 2035 and globally by 2040.
As the only Chinese company among them, BYD announced the suspension of fuel vehicles just over four months later, becoming the world's first! Although this is a small step in BYD's transformation, it has become a big step in the history of the automobile industry, and the phrase "new energy vehicle leader" after BYD's brand identity has finally been fulfilled with practical actions.
2. How much effort has BYD made to this step?
As we all know, BYD is making a fortune in mobile phone batteries, but it has not been smooth sailing in the car, and after acquiring Qinchuan Automobile, it stumbled all the way and finally launched the first model in the true sense - F3. However, ATD, which was still a "new car-making force" at the time, because of the thin foundation, this car copied the Toyota Corolla in appearance, and the power used the ready-made Dongan Mitsubishi Power, which once made the media criticize and be laughed at by peers.
