Overtaking in the corners, the curtain of China's automobile manufacturing transformation in the 21st century is slowly opening.

Throughout the history of global automotive industry change, any inadvertent innovation will change the direction of the entire industry - let the automobile manufacturing center shift, and bring about the migration of the entire industrial chain.

110 years ago, 50-year-old Henry Ford dismantled 7882 manufacturing processes, realized the production of automobile assembly lines, reduced assembly time from 12 hours to 24 seconds, and evolved automobile manufacturing from a workshop to a factory model.

The automobile thus entered the homes of hundreds of millions of volkswagens, and the global automobile manufacturing center also moved from Europe to the United States, and the United States rose on the basis of automobile, steel, railway and other manufacturing industries, and its comprehensive national strength surpassed that of the United Kingdom and won the world.

88 years ago, 40-year-old Kiichiro Toyoda developed a small and powerful 3389 cc 6-cylinder in-line engine, and since then gradually launched the Toyota series of cars, he used a lean production model to reduce the fuel consumption of cars, making Toyota gradually become the king of global sales.

In the 1970s and 1980s, with the rise of Manufacturing industries such as Toyota, Mitsubishi and Panasonic, the total GDP of Japan was close to that of the United States, and Harvard University scholar Vogel exclaimed "Japan First".

China's auto industry started late, but generations of hard work have been passed down from generation to generation.

35 years ago, 75-year-old Rao Bin, the father of Chinese automobiles, returned to Jilin Changchun FAW Group and gave the last moving speech of his life: "I am old, I can't devote myself to the third venture with everyone." However, I am willing to lie on the ground, turn into a bridge, let everyone step on my body, and work together to build a car to realize the car dream of our generations of Chinese automakers!" 」

China's auto industry has experienced countless waves of entrepreneurship and evolution.

Nowadays, state-owned, joint venture, private, national independence and other automobile brands, new energy vehicles are advancing, and are seizing the global automobile manufacturing industry highland. At the same time, the wave of new energy, digitalization and automation is also coming to the automotive industry.

A generation has a generation's mission, and a generation has a generation's glory and dreams.

Once upon a time, seemingly inconspicuous technological innovations have changed the history of automobile evolution.

Today, ordinary engineers and workers at FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu are using digital means to revolutionize the model of automobile production.

An exploration of paint shop engineers

On February 23, 2021, Cui Guangming, a senior engineer at the painting workshop of Chengdu FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch, and the workers finally had more calm in their hearts.

The clutter of paper in the office is gone, workers no longer have to spend more than two hours filling out Excel forms, environmental inspection workers no longer have to run sweaty, and the number of communication calls that come and go amid the noise has decreased.

Over the past few years, the blue-collar workers on the workshop have been hard and busy. While bending down to test the process parameters such as car body film thickness, color, slot PH, temperature, etc., they hold a paper record and regularly report to the relevant person in charge of the automobile assembly line.

In this way, there are problems such as slow feedback, easy to forget, data value can not be fully utilized, and abnormal parameters may cause great fluctuations in the quality of body paint, and workers are extremely distressed.

Cui Guangming is a senior engineer with more than 10 years of work experience, mainly responsible for the on-site technical system and equipment management of the painting workshop.

He is more interested in digitalization and usually likes to delve into new things and technologies. Previously, more focused on system independent development, mainly using Python, JS, Java and other languages to develop digital intelligence systems, but later found that with more and more digital needs, full-code development needs to spend a lot of energy, longer cycle, which makes him very distressed.

"For the first time, I discovered that digital applications could be developed by dragging and dropping." During the May Day in 2021, by chance, he was pleasantly surprised when browsing the group DingTalk Yiqiao, and found that low code can not only quickly meet digital needs, but also save a lot of energy to delve into other businesses.

Cui Guangming immediately took action and built a new digital system through DingTalk Yi. Such as laboratory and process parameter management applications, to achieve paint quality inspection data and groove parameters online, detection workers with mobile phones can use the abnormal parameters through the process to inform the person in charge and superior supervisors in a timely manner, each level after receiving DingTalk information can be timely organization of on-site solution.

For example, in the safety management application, the on-site workers can fill in the safety inspection problems through the mobile phone terminal, and the relevant safety hazards can be pushed to the mobile phone of the person in charge in time. After the rectification of relevant safety hazards, the workshop workers will then take photos and upload the hidden danger rectification situation on the mobile phone, without repeatedly filling in Word and without making back and forth calls, and the work efficiency is greatly improved.

In May 2021, Cui Guangming used DingTalk Yi tie to develop digital applications for the painting workshop, realizing the digital migration of more than 30 core businesses in nine fields, including safety, quality, efficiency, technology, production and epidemic prevention.

Another big problem that plagues Cui Guangming is the energy saving and environmental protection of the factory. This depends on the environmental protection level of the painting workshop, and the discharge of wastewater, waste gas and waste on the painting production line accounts for 90% of the entire automobile manufacturing process.

But the painting workshop area is very large, it takes more than an hour for workers to walk around, and there are more than twenty discharge ports alone.

China has implemented high standards for the control of VOC painting exhaust emissions, and in the past, the workload was very large, and it was only possible to rely on personnel to check on the spot, and workers often sweated when running back and forth.

How to solve this puzzle?

Cui Guangming uploaded the real-time detection data of the sensor to DingTalk through the self-developed intermediate server. Whether it is an environmental administrator or an ordinary worker, you can see the changed data through DingTalk.

If it is found that the data reaches 80% of the emission standard, DingTalk will automatically push an alarm to the person in charge of equipment and environmental protection, and check and solve the problem in advance.

Driven by the problems of one workshop after another, Cui Guangming and the workers found ways to realize the equipment online through two-dimensional codes and other methods, and opened up real-time data such as production, quality management, and environmental protection with the help of sensors.

The paint shop realizes the digitization of business based on production management needs and the onlineization of field equipment.

Tearing down the "islands and chimneys" of factories

Cui Guangming's digital exploration in the painting workshop caused a strong response among the workers, and the engineers and workers in various workshops of the company spontaneously asked him for advice.

The company has a production workshop of the whole automobile industry chain, with a daily production of 2,000 cars and more than 6,000 employees.

The place with the greatest density of information flow is the dispatch post of the production workshop – this is the heart of the workshop.

The car dispatch post connects the huge workshop behind the car. Workshops and workers on all assembly lines can only produce after obtaining accurate information in real time.

Busy workshop leaders need to know the daily production schedule and real-time production progress, as well as the production quality of each component, so that adjustments can be made in real time. The workers in the dispatch center need to enter the company's system to check the data, and then verbally feedback to the heads of each workshop.

At the same time, every two hours, the dispatch center also needs to know the real-time production progress and quality control status of each workshop in order to adjust and dispatch the workshop on the entire assembly line, but they manually enter the computer system in Excel.

According to this information communication method, the heads of each production workshop have to spend several hours calling back and forth to communicate.

Automobile manufacturing is a highly sophisticated assembly line manufacturing project that requires the coordination and cooperation of different workshops.

"The repeated communication between different workshops on the assembly line with telephones is essentially the real-time sharing and interaction of car data." Cui Guangming said to the point that hundreds of people on the assembly line are paying attention to real-time production, but these people need to communicate with one or two people every day, the efficiency is very low, and the workload of workers in the dispatch center is particularly large.

Manual Word input to the computer, switch back and forth between different management information systems, paper to pass information... Information systems are silos and chimneys.

Cui Guangming sighed that managers need to enter from different entrances for approval, etc., in different places, managers especially need to spend a lot of time to find the system entrance.

These systems are incompatible, slow to respond, and extremely expensive to maintain, and they stand like isolated "chimneys" and "islands" within the company.

Why not tear down these chimneys and silos? This call is getting stronger and stronger in the hearts of front-line engineers and workers.

"For me, a business person who has been working in the manufacturing field for a long time and loves digitalization, I can save a lot of development time and give me the energy to think about how to build some more complex digital applications that meet the production site, so as to help the construction of digital workshops, further improve efficiency and reduce costs." Cui Guangming pointed out.

Today, FAW-Volkswagen Chengdu Branch has 6 front-line engineers and workers spontaneously formed a virtual "digital team", through dingtalk digital transformation, each workshop filled in the production data in real time on the mobile phone DingTalk APP, all data is displayed in real time on the DingTalk end, open to people at different levels.

Cui Guangming found through business research in various fields of automobile manufacturing that the use of DingTalk low-code development can not only realize the business digitization of the core production links, but also make the production, operation and management of enterprises more efficient through the integration of organizational digitalization and business digitalization.

"For example, quality management can be unified with the quality assurance department, and security management can be connected with the security department," Cui Guangming said, "digitalization is not tall and difficult, and it does not have to understand a lot of programming skills, it originates from the field and serves the core business."

Why do front-line workers choose DingTalk?

Digitalization is the greatest certainty of this era, and digital transformation has become a consensus at FAW-Volkswagen Co., Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as "FAW-Volkswagen").

Today, nearly 500 people in FAW-Volkswagen use Yi tie on DingTalk for low-code development, and more than 90% of the front-line personnel in the business are engaged.

"The company has now formed a boom in low code for all employees." Zhang Wenbo, project manager of DINGTalk of FAW-Volkswagen Management Service Department, lamented that what they did not expect was that in the absence of vigorous promotion and publicity, the business department would take the initiative to try this new tool, and then slowly through word of mouth, so that more and more business departments began to use low code.

According to Zhang Wenbo, the digital demand of business departments has surged in recent years, but IT resources are limited, and most of them are invested in large business systems, which is difficult to meet every scattered and personalized digital need.

FAW-Volkswagen Management Service Department has realized that low-code development can bring great value to digital transformation, began to investigate the low-code platform, in early 2021, the management service department in the IT service management portal transformation, found that DingTalk has a low-code development tool suitable for use, it will introduce this tool to the company to open to all employees.

The digital commissioner mechanism established by FAW-Volkswagen Management Service Department has selected a part of the people in each business department to become digital commissioners, responsible for collecting the production line needs of business units, evaluating the path of digital realization, and forming a virtual organization "digital studio" between them.

At present, in FAW-Volkswagen, low-code development is a state of blooming. The business department has developed many small applications, including travel approval, safe operation, inspection, spare parts management, etc.

A maintenance engineer in Changchun Factory realized the digital maintenance function through DingTalk low code, so that spare parts, equipment maintenance and other information can be grasped in real time on the mobile phone, and at the same time solved the common mobile terminal compatibility problems of self-developed APP in the past.

"Low-code development has nothing to do with academic qualifications, whether it is engineers, front-line workers, or students who have just graduated from technical schools, low-code development can be used." Zhang Wenbo sighed.

In the thousands of people in The Fenghua New Energy Company in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province, only CIO Luo Xunheng understands code, and the team of 6 is halfway out of the house, and what is even more surprising is that the main trader of their "central digital brain" is a young liberal arts student.

Why did 500 people at FAW-Volkswagen choose to embrace DingTalk?

Ye Zhangchao, the founder of Hongtu, once said bluntly that other software is a hammer transaction, a transaction, "We and DingTalk are partners."

"Why does DingTalk have penetration in manufacturing?" I think the core reason is the lack of digitalization in manufacturing. So it's not that we're driving the digitalization of the manufacturing industry, it's the digitalization of the manufacturing industry that's developing DingTalk."

DingTalk President Ye Jun visited dozens of large and medium-sized enterprises, and this "sinking" made Ye Jun think more:

"When the digitalization of enterprises penetrates into the core business links, the production and operation data of enterprises can be fully flowed, and the data will reduce costs and increase efficiency for thousands of industries with the same frequency."

DingTalk proposes "two digitizations" for organization and business. People are the foundation of the enterprise, and the organization and business are the two pillars that support the enterprise or unit.

Nowadays, DingTalk has opened up more base capabilities and high-frequency scenarios, creating a new application form - "cool application", allowing applications to circulate in high-frequency scenarios such as IM, changing the way software is delivered and applied, changing the way applications are used, and making applications "live".

The digital "car dream" breaks through

Cui Guangming, after the 80s, has always had his own car dream.

He has loved cars since he was a child, is keen to study automobile construction, studied mechanical design and manufacturing and its automation during college, and after graduating from Chongqing University with a master's degree in 2012, he entered the CHENGDU branch of FAW-Volkswagen as he wished.

In more than 10 years of automotive manufacturing equipment management and production management, Cui Guangming has gradually realized the importance of digitalization.

Of course, he is familiar with the aforementioned stories of Henry Ford, Toyoda Kiichiro, Musk and others in the field of continuous innovation and progress in the automotive field.

He knows that at present, China's automobile industry is moving towards digitalization, and will achieve industrial intelligence in the future.

Cui Guangming has his own three-step digital blueprint and steps: the first step is to realize the digitization of a single business from the bottom up from the workshop; the second step is to realize the digitization of the company's entire industrial chain; the third step is to realize the whole process of the industrial chain such as upstream and downstream partners and suppliers in automobile manufacturing.

He and the workers of the "Digital Studio" are doing more exploration and breakthrough.

Today, a group of ordinary front-line workers are using DingTalk to transform the digitalization of business, and are digitally transforming automobile production, manufacturing, and supply chain management, and FAW-Volkswagen ordinary workers are using digital methods to catch up with the automobile dream.

In the past, the innovation of the automotive industry was mainly led by elites, but now workers stand on the shoulders of DingTalk and embark on the wave of automotive digital innovation.
