Architecture for ordinary people
In 2022, the Pritzker Prize, the highest honor in architecture, was awarded to an architect from Africa, Diébédo Francis Kéré. Francis Carlyle was born in 1965 in the impoverished West African country of Burkina Faso, the first child in the village to attend university.
When Francis Carlyle grew up in his hometown, he felt that the classroom conditions in the countryside were harsh and detrimental to the physical and mental health of children. As a teenager, he traveled to Germany on a carpenter's scholarship and learned to work as a carpenter during the day and culture classes at night. In 1995, he was again awarded a scholarship to study architecture at the university. In 2001, Francis Carlyle amassed and raised a sum of money in Germany, returned to his hometown of Gando, and used the architectural design knowledge he learned in Germany and the native materials of his hometown to build Gando Primary School with the local people of Gando. This is his first work.

Since then, Francis Carlyle has built primary schools, secondary schools and hospitals in many African countries. He emphasized the use of local materials, working with the locals, and building buildings that conform to the local culture and have a universal aesthetic. He unified architecture, nature and people, creating spaces for harmonious interaction, giving comfort and dignity to the poorest.
