Architecture is the carrier of urban civilization and the recorder of the changes of the times, and the Shamian architectural complex is the "exclusive memory" belonging to Guangzhou. At the fork of the Pearl River, on the banks of White Swan Pond, the exotic sand-faced buildings are lined up here, which is a well-known punch card attraction passed down by young people.

On March 11th, the activity "Appreciating Architectural Aesthetics, Following the Historical Fabric - Everyone is a Disseminator of Shamian Culture" sponsored by the Shamian Street Working Committee of the People's Congress of Liwan District was held in Shamian Historical and Cultural Block. Professor Fan Lin from the School of Arts and Humanities of the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts was invited to serve as an interpretive expert to interpret the sand noodles for the merchants and residents from the aspects of history, culture, aesthetics and interlingual exchanges.

The organizers hope that both the neighbors and merchants who live here can become witnesses and introducers of Shamian culture.

The four cases carry different styles of history and culture

"We must not underestimate every detail in these buildings, from the style of the staircase, the structure of the fireplace, and even the pattern of the vents, we can reverse the history to get the motives and aesthetic appeals that the people who built here may have." In No. 38 Shamian Avenue, Professor Fan Lin stood on the nearly 200-year-old staircase, looked up and pointed to the vents of the syllable pattern, and told the audience the stylistic characteristics and long history of Shamian architecture.

The carving of the staircase is also exquisite

For Shamian, people often have this misconception that this is a European style of architecture. Professor Fan Lin told reporters that the architecture of Shamian is the embodiment of the localization of the eclectic style, which is to combine the classical style with other new construction techniques, such as the use of steel and glass. These different architectural styles can find shadows on the sand surface, Corinthian stone columns, similar proportions of dome ceilings, etc., brick and wood, all carry the wisdom crystallized by generations of architects for us.

Based on the use of cultural relics buildings in Shamian Historical and Cultural District, the event selected four representative historical buildings of Asian colonialism, colonialism, eclecticism and neoclassical style as examples. According to reports, these buildings are basically two-storey, pay attention to symmetry and coordination, and are both practical and ornamental. If you compare it carefully, you can also glimpse the situation of a hundred years ago from the building, for example, compared with the extravagant atmosphere of the old salt deputy inspector's residence, the missionary's residence is restrained and courteous.

For the first time, merchants stationed in heritage buildings were curious about them

In recent years, Shamian Street has strengthened the revitalization and utilization of cultural relics buildings, and on the basis of cultural relics protection, it has introduced high-end commercial and cultural characteristic industries, and private capital has intervened to rent them, properly protected the core value elements of the building, and implemented organic renewal. Sipping tea and coffee in historical buildings to see the scenery has become a new way of "punching in" from Shamian Island to Shangshang.

After introducing four different styles of architecture, Professor Fan Lin summarized the revitalization and utilization of the current cultural relics building as the concept of "decency is principle". What is decency? Professor Fan Lin believes that to be "decent", we need to analyze and discuss how to repair these buildings in the context of historicism and specifics, so as to retain the charm of these buildings as much as possible, and repair the old as old.

Professor Fan Lin lectures on architectural style "decency is principle"

For example, No. 43 Shamian North Street, built in the late Qing Dynasty and early Ming Dynasty, is a Class B building of the Shamian Architectural Complex, a national key cultural relics protection unit. Jiang Yaohui, a cultural relics collector, took over the place, and in accordance with the regulations of architectural relics, he repaired the old as old, decorated the interior, and built it into a private museum without glass partitions on the basis of preserving the old appearance of the building as much as possible.

To maintain the properness of cultural relics buildings, it is not enough to repair and protect them, but also to let the masses also enter cultural relics buildings, and popular cultural relics buildings are "living" buildings.

Under Professor Fan's explanation, these merchants stationed in the cultural relics buildings were curious about the ventilation pattern of their shops for the first time, and for the first time truly understood the history behind these buildings. Huang Hanxi, head of the building at No. 58 Shamian South Street, said: "As a businessman operating in historical buildings, we lack in-depth understanding of historical buildings, and through expert explanations, we can better understand the building we are in and love this land more." In the daily operation, we are able to share this knowledge with our tourists, our neighbors, our friends. ”

Deputies to the National People's Congress actively participate in the protection of Shamian buildings

At this event, the Shamian Street Working Committee of the Liwan District People's Congress actively played the role of people's congress deputies in propaganda and guidance, organized the representatives of the Shamian Street Joint Group of the People's Congress to take the lead, and fully mobilized the merchants and residents in Shamian District to participate in it, creating a strong atmosphere of wide social support and active participation in the protection of historical and cultural blocks in all aspects.

Zhang Qiming, deputy to the Liwan District People's Congress and director of the Political Work Office of the Guangdong Branch of the General Administration of Customs, said: "The historical buildings in Shamian are very historical and cultural. The Shamian Street Working Committee of the National People's Congress organized experts to explain to us, which can deepen everyone's awareness of the protection of historical buildings. We must give play to the role of people's congress deputies in grass-roots governance, and constantly promote the strengthening of the awareness of the protective use of historical buildings. ”

The person in charge of the Shamian Street Working Committee of the Liwan District People's Congress said that in the next step, the deputies to the people's congress will continue to give full play to the advantages of connecting with the masses, deeply understand the people's feelings, truly reflect the people's opinions, widely concentrate the wisdom of the people, and improve the cultural pride of the merchants and residents in the jurisdiction by strengthening the form of interaction with the masses, cultivate everyone's publicity awareness, and continue to promote the protection and utilization of historical buildings and historical and cultural blocks.
