Lance's smile
Hello everyone! Today to introduce you to the high relief sculptures of the Basilica of Notre Dame de Láns, France, "Annunciation" and "The Virgin Of the Past", created between 1211 and 1233 AD, famous for the smile on the face of the angel, known as the "smile of Reims", representing the peak of the carving art of the 13th century.
Located 140 kilometers northeast of Paris, Reims is the place where successive Kings of France held coronation ceremonies and is known as the "Coronation City".
"Annunciation of the Angels" and "The Sight of the Virgin" are the two most famous groups of statues in the carving art of Reims Cathedral, these statues are vivid and full of personality, it seems that the statues themselves are a truly independent living individual for those who make it, and the posture and beauty of each individual are not only different from those of their neighbors, but also occupy the same space and breathe the same air with us.
The wrinkles of the figurines are soft and loose, and the changes in the body's curves, center of gravity and psychology are clearly displayed, and this technique of clothing engraving has not been used and known for 900 years.
When the Virgin Mary was conceived as a virgin, the slender, curly-haired angel with long eyes was gracefully tilting her body slightly, and her face stretched out with the famous "Lance-like smile" to announce the good news.
