Herman and Regrindies
Hello everyone! Today I would like to introduce the statue "Hermann and Regrinds" in the west hall of the main church of Naumburg in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, created in 1250 AD.
The Kingdom of Saxony, roughly located in the present-day Netherlands, western Germany, Switzerland and Austria, was popular in Germany in the 13th century due to its convenient geographical location, the Gothic art of French origin and the pursuit of elegance and naturalism.
Gothic sculpture and architecture is the symbol of the highest achievements of medieval art in Europe, in addition to the religious figures and mythos standing at the entrances of churches or monasteries, the portraits of the dead are increasingly appearing on the tombs of royalty, nobility and clergy, and in terms of their authenticity and credibility, the statues of secular people are different from the idealism of religious saints, radiant virtue and transcendent image characteristics.
In order to pursue a realistic and true appearance of the deceased, the ancient people directly on the face of the deceased to buckle the mold, and then made a realistic wax head for commemoration, this naturalistic way led to the expression of personality, highlighting the development of realistic portraits of individuals, German sculptors are pushing this way to the extreme, bringing the life of the world into the church, the pious faith into a real, natural image.
Like the statue of Eckhart and Utah that we introduced earlier, the natural and authentic pose of Hermann and Regrindies, with its funny and happy expressions, was very creative at the time.
