Moldova is Ukraine's smallest and weakest neighbor. In terms of population ratio, Moldova, with a population of 2.6 million, has become the country that receives the most refugees. At present, the country has received a total of 270,000 refugees. Moldovan Interior Minister Ana Revenco told Germany's Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on the 7th, "This war has undermined the stability of everyone. The large number of refugees posed a huge challenge to the country's internal affairs and border defense. ”

At present, Moldova has set up a number of temporary camps so that refugees have a place to rest and have access to bread, hot tea and other things necessary for the maintenance of dignity. However, about half of the Ukrainian refugees who came to Moldova traveled to neighboring Romania or other countries on the same day or after a few short stays. To that end, the country has established a "refugee corridor" with Romania so that those who pass through can reach their destinations more quickly.

Compared with the "refugee tide", Moldova is more worried about getting involved in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict. The Moldovan government believes that this is not necessarily the entire country being "occupied" by Russian troops. Most likely, if Russian troops occupied the Ukrainian port city of Odessa, they could march north from there to occupy the Transnistrian region, which had broken away from Moldova.

According to the 1992 agreement between Moldova and Russia and other countries, it was stipulated that the Transnistrian region should be garrisoned in the conflict zone by a peacekeeping force composed of Russia, Moldova and Transnistria, and Moldova effectively lost control of the Transnistrian region.

This long, narrow country has always been "pro-Russian" and financed mainly by Moscow. Last week in particular, Moldovan President Maia Sandu called for the European Union to include the country as a member. This made the Russians hear it, and there must have been a feeling of betrayal. In fact, Moldova has no military power to oppose Russia, is constitutionally neutral and does not seek to join NATO.

Moldova also fears that the EU will abandon itself. On Sunday, diplomatic missions from EU countries had to carry out an emergency mission in Moldova. The EU ambassador to Chisinau promised that Moldova would certainly not be abandoned. U.S. Secretary of State Blinken also visited the country and reiterated the U.S. willingness to help. German Foreign Minister Berberk will also visit Chisinau this weekend.

The scene is reminiscent of Ukraine, after the United States and the European Union had egged on the Kiev government to confront Russia and made many promises. But in the end, when Russian troops invaded, Western allies quickly abandoned the Kiev government for various reasons. Now they will do little more than give some money and scrap weapons, and help arrange for the Kiev government to go into exile.
