Nissan detailed its upcoming CMF-EV platform for electric vehicles

Nissan today delved into its latest ev vehicle architecture, the CMF-EV platform, revealing the complexities that underpin its future electric models. Affectionately known at Nissan as the "Magical Flying Carpet," the CMF-EV platform offers designers a wide range of creative opportunities to redefine the driver and passenger experience.

For the first time, the EV-specific platform will be used for the Nissan Ariya, the brand's first all-electric two-door crossover. "The CMF-EV platform is a marvel of creative engineering; from providing exceptional living room-style spaces – longer cabin lengths to vehicle lengths – to adapting to our state-of-the-art e-4ORCE driveline technology, its versatility allows us to push the boundaries of engineering and design capabilities," said Pierre Loing, vice president of product planning at Nissan Motor Co., Ltd

CMF-EV also brings more opportunities for cooperation. The platform leverages synergies within the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to maximize manufacturing efficiency in order to achieve a partner's shared roadmap for 2030 – bringing the best value to customers moving toward an exciting electrified future.

As the alliance recently announced, by 2030, the platform will be the basis for 15 electric models.

"The definition of CMF-EV is technological innovation and its potential for modularization, paving the way for the next generation of exciting electric vehicles launched by Nissan and our alliance partners," added Pierre Loing.

"Nissan has entered an exciting new chapter in its electrification story with Ariya. This landmark vehicle provides a unique opportunity for our global team to showcase everything we've learned about electric vehicles over the past decade and to challenge expectations. This is exactly what the CMF-EV platform represents," said David Moss, Senior Vice President of Regional R&D at Nissan's European Technology Center.

Nissan's engineers provided a flat board surface for the CMF-EV platform, with placeholders for the motor drawn near the front and rear axes, and the battery pack designed to be as thin as possible, forming the structural support system for the platform. The CMF-EV platform provides Ariya's designers with a blank canvas to explore the Ma concept, Nissan's design philosophy focused on harnessing the potential of white space.

In the absence of transmission channels, the air conditioning unit was placed further forward and the front and rear seat positions were optimized, allowing Nissan's designers to take advantage of all available space. The entire cabin is spacious and has more legroom, creating a lounge-like experience. Thanks to the movable center console, the cabin space can be further customized.

The innovation platform also rewards drivers. The CMF-EV platform gives customers the flexibility to choose the right package for their needs, and can accommodate power units and drivetrains in a variety of sizes – including single-motor products and dual-motor e-4ORCE configurations.

The e-4ORCE is Nissan's most advanced all-wheel control technology. With a series of precise motor and brake inputs, the innovative system strikes the perfect balance between powerful performance and unprecedented control – increasing driver confidence on a wide range of roads. While providing a dynamic but reassuring driving experience, the e-4ORCE also carefully minimizes vehicle spacing when braking, optimizing the front and rear brake balances to provide a stable, smooth driving experience for drivers and passengers.

Nissan Ariya is now accepting bookings in the UK, Norway and the Netherlands, and the process will soon open up in more European markets. Ariya will arrive in European countries in the summer of 2022. The Ariya is just one of the exciting models to hit the roads of Europe this summer as Nissan prepares to step up its electrification offensive with more information about the upcoming comprehensive lineup.
