In fact, only 5%-15% of thyroid nodules are malignant, that is, thyroid cancer! So as patients, how do we roughly understand whether we are benign or malignant?
Identification by color ultrasound
The TI-RADS level on the color ultrasound list is the level of thyroid nodules. Note: The higher the level, the greater the likelihood of malignant nodules (i.e., thyroid cancer).
Less than or equal to grade 3, benign nodules are more likely to be considered. If the patient has no clinical symptoms, it can be observed regularly. If the nodule is relatively large, compressing the trachea and esophagus, causing difficulty swallowing and breathing, surgery can be performed.
Grade 4 indicates the possibility of malignancy, and doctors generally use fine needle aspiration biopsy to obtain a pathological diagnosis of nodules, which is the gold standard for diagnosing benign and malignant nodules.
Grade 5 indicates a high risk of malignancy and surgery may be considered.

When should people with thyroid nodules be reviewed?
TI-RADS level 4, the probability of malignancy of nodules of this level spans a larger range. So it is divided into 4a and 4b levels.

But this is mainly related to the nature of the nodules, thyroid nodules can be divided into: solid, cystic and cystic solid three.
Because cystic nodules are liquid, they have the worst pressure resistance and are prone to rupture! After rupture, the liquid in the nodule is easily absorbed, and the nodule collapses and disappears.
Solid and cystic nodules have some solid components and are less prone to rupture. And even if they are broken, their solid components are difficult to fully absorb, and the thyroid gland will form new nodules after repairing itself. Therefore, solid and cystic nodules generally do not disappear on their own.

Thyroid nodules generally do not require iodine
Because studies related to iodine supplementation in China have shown that in areas with iodine adequacy and iodine excess, the detection rate of thyroid nodules is 21.8% and 20.7%, respectively, there is no difference, and there is no increase in thyroid nodules.
Moreover, eating less iodine is also a factor in triggering thyroid nodules. (So, it's not just iodine that gets too much...) ）
Iodine intake is only required in the following special cases:
1. It will affect the pregnancy preparation.
If you have thyroid disease or a family history of thyroid disease at the time of pregnancy, it is recommended to have thyroid function tests before pregnancy and adjust thyroid function normally before trying to conceive.
2. If you are already pregnant, it is recommended to check whether the thyroid function is abnormal, and listen to the doctor's advice.
As long as the thyroid nodule does not compress the esophagus or trachea, does not affect thyroid function, and is not malignant, then it does not affect fertility.
However, during pregnancy preparation and within 3 months of pregnancy, it is necessary to go to a regular hospital to check thyroid function. Because nodules may cause hypothyroidism, which in turn affects the development of the fetal nervous system.
