Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday (February 26) to discuss the current situation in Kiev, according to Indian media.
Zelensky wrote on Twitter: "I spoke with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and informed Ukraine of the process of repelling Russian aggression. More than 100,000 invaders were on our land, and they secretly opened fire on residential buildings. Urge India to give us political support at the UN Security Council. Stop the aggressors together".
The call comes as Russia stepped up its attack on Ukraine, which is seeking help from Western countries.
The Indian Prime Minister's Office issued a statement saying: "President Zelensky gave the Prime Minister a detailed account of the current conflict situation in Ukraine. The Prime Minister expressed his deep sorrow at the loss of life and property caused by the ongoing conflict. He reiterated his call for an immediate cessation of violence and the resumption of dialogue, and expressed India's willingness to contribute in any way to peace efforts".
The statement added: "The Prime Minister also expressed India's deep concern about the safety and security of Indian citizens in Ukraine, including students. He sought the assistance of the Ukrainian authorities to evacuate Indian citizens quickly and safely".
